Loaddata book came in and its for the 458 Win Mag, no such luck in finding an oddity.

hex,

why are you posting about load books in Shootall and Corbanzo's  Magnum thread. ::) ;D

A lot of us tend to have a hard time staying on message and I am probably one of the worst hijackers. :-[

Now that you got your load book I think the rules state you have to go out and out and buy a 375 & 458 so your purchase doesn't go to waste. ;)

the belt helped in double rifles but what does it do in a bolt gun ?
Not correct! Double rifles work best for extraction with rimmed cartridges and lower pressure. Tha's what all the classics like the 450 3 1/4" NE and the 500/450 NE, 500 NE as well as most others all have rims and NO belts.

Actually shootall is correct.  Rimless cartridges such as the 458 wm/Lott with no shoulder need the belt in older double rifles - they have no rim, and therefor without a belt could be shoved too far into the chamber, making extended headspacing and a dangerous situation - that was the point to the belt in the first place.

You are correct that a rimmed cartridge has no purpose for a belt in this situation - but a rimless does.

With newer design, tight chambers, and reliable extractors, the belt is once again worthless - but it did have its place at once time in history.

Actually Weatherby really started the belted magnum marketing craze where the belts were there for looks and a selling aid. Remington and Winchester followed suit (but the 458 does actually require the belt).
Talking about un-necessary belts and good looking cases that have them, I gotta admit I'm a fan of the 8mm Remington Magnum even though I never had one. It was in an article in the very first gun mag I bought and it left an impression on me. Based on the 375H&H case, it comes with the belt, and it's one mean looking cartridge. The 8x68 provides similar performance but the cartridge doesn't have the same visual appeal.

really it is correct as some rounds were made to go in both break open and bolt along with falling block actions . If you desire to be correct then the british cart. are called flanged not rimmed  ;)

It would also help is cartridge manufactures actually kept to the specs and made the cartridge cases tot hose specifications. sadly not many do. Check a few and notice the measurable differences.

I own a P-H 1100M in .458 and having shot other large bores including a 505 Gibbs once I really do wonder why the 458 has so much recoil. I wonder if it's the straight case?

The reason i ended up with the 458 was I was too slow and didn't think correctly and should have put adeposit down on the 404 he had but once I got some money together it had gone  :'(  .

I wanted a british big game rifle and the P-H meets that to a degree would have been better in .375 or 404 Jefferies but could not find one that I could afford at the time.

Now if you want some real fun with the .458 try shooting some 510 Grn factory Soft Points from the prone position  ;)  it's sure to get your attention. Due to some really silly rules on the Bisley ranges unless shooting in a specified competition shooting is only down prone on the gallery ranges except on certain firing points that have benches.

REALLY GUYs! Its not that bad! I have 3 458 win mags, You stanwhen shooting these and roll with the recoil. You square up on the target and hold the rifle tight. And... KickEEZ magnum recoil pads help. No they really help! I load my 458 down to mid range 45/70 loads and they are fun!

I shoot my 458 win mag in all different positions including off a bi-pod with factory 510gn win and hand loads(over 700) so far and as yet have not had a bruse. It is a Zastava M70 with a Boyd thumbhole stock, which I fitted a Houge grind to fit recoil pad , I use two different scopes,a Nikon 1-4x20 African for close hunting and a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 mil dot for shooting Deer out over Oat crops.Cheers Allan
