ibgp3,

How'd the length of the formed 357 brass come out?  Sounds like a fun project.  I have been obsessed with researching efficiency of cartridges these days.  What I mean by that is best performance with the least amount of powder.  With reloading component prices going up, it seems this is what we should be concentrating on.  Be sure to keep us posted with the development of your project.

I like the idea of a 300 Blackout rimmed.
Add 1 of these to a stub and you are on the way
http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/productdetail.aspx?id=M-308C
only drawback it has a 1-10 twist
This one has a 1-8 twist which is what the specs call for
http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/productdetail.aspx?id=RX308
This one has a 300 bore with 311 groove
http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/productdetail.aspx?id=AK-BLANK
it has a 1-9.5 twist
guess it would be a 32-300 Blackout rimmed

hmm got to quit thinking about this  too many projects now lol ;D

These cases are various lengths now, and they were probably various lengths before I started.
The longest is 1.31, and I think I would cut to 1.30 for uniformity.
Since they won't be going through an automatic magazine or action the neck should be great.

Looks like I have at least until March to wait for a barrel.

From another forum:

(Name deleted) has his own 30 caliber cartridge base off the 357 Magnum called the 30/357 Magnum. Case has 0.004 taper, 35 degree shoulder & .295 neck length. Cases are trimmed to 1.165".

From the same forum:
Another option would be to trim a new 357 maximum case to 1.36" and then size it with 300 Whisper die. This would give you a rimmed version of the 300 Whisper.

That was from 2008.

...and P.O. Ackley did it long before that.

I need to know if this is a sure thing, because I would go ahead and buy a die set and work on some brass........

I've seen the rifle, and Dinny said that he shot one.
.....what I'm worried about is that there won't be many and they will stay scarce and high.

The dies were on the shelf and the brass formed with one pass.
Not much preparation required if you want to wait for a sure thing.

I will be about 2 miles from Midway the first week in January, I think I will swing by and pick up a set of those dies, just in case...........

Unfortunately I have not shot one. However, Mr. White does make stubbed barrels for the Handi in 300 AAC-rimmed. ;)

Take 357 Max brass and run it in a 300 blk die and you have a long necked 300BLK, with a 30-30 neck length.

I did that about 20 years ago, put a 30-30 length neck on 357max brass and shot it in IHMSA.

Another alternative, would be to back off the 300 blk die, the difference in case length dimensions between the 300blk and 357 max, and have a 300blk neck length, with a longer case body.  That would give pretty good performance.   You might be able to run a 300 blk reamer in the chamber, to lengthen the body.

I think there was a 30/357mag many decades ago, called the 30 streaker.

Either way, rimmed or rimless, it should be a fun cartridge to play with.

Maybe this could start something new, a 256 Mag maybe, or a 256 Max. At this point anything new is a plus, even if only as a platform to work from. In for a penny, in for a pound.Bring it......

These are 4 pieces of brass that I made up for the gunsmith to use as gauges for my stub project.
This is a combination of .357Maxi brass and a 6.5TCU die.
From what I understand he offers this combination in just about anything from .17 to .308, (except .256)
I used to shoot a lot of 7x223, and really like it.

That IS a good looking little bugger!

I remember reading a story in one of the rags about a fello who bought a 256 Barrel and upon firing found aweful groups and funny loking cases... Long story short someone had made a 256MAXI.. Pretty neat until he realized the cost of the dies made the whole thing fiscally impossible for the average guy...

Just a thought, DIES need to be considered, custom dies are EXPENSIVE!

Your rimmed Blaskout ios appealing cause it can use existing dies!!  SAME for adding rims to popular semi rimmed calibers like 243, 7/08/ 308 338 and 358... NO specail dies required!!!

Dies definitely need to be considered.

6.5 TCU dies are off the shelf on eBay.

The 45 LC didn't show up in a rifle for a long time (75 yrs?) because of patent restrictions.
Hadn't heard that about the .45LC, got a link to that story. Inquiring minds & all.  :)

What barrel length is that?? Overall looks good. I need to diet anyway, $20 a week lunch money, 12 weeks, $240. That will cover the bulk of it. Should lose about 20 pounds while I am at it. Starting NOW.
