357 max Question?
« on: August 14, 2011, 10:48:08 PM »
Hi Guy's

Curiosity has got me wondering, what are you guys that have 357 max handi rifles are getting for velocity with 180 gr. hornady XTP's. Thinking one might be neat.

Thanks,

Jr,

I get 1900 fps with an 18.75" barrel (talo trapper model).  Using H110, 21 grains, Federal Small Pistol primer.  Roll crimped in the bottom groove of the bullet.  Easy 1 to 2 inch 3-shot groups @ 100 yards w/4x scope.   I think with AA1680 and a 22" barrel you could get another 200 fps.

My maxi likes the 180 gr. bullets pushed fast, averaging around 1800 fps.  There's a lot of powder options with it.  I like RL7 and H110 or 296.  4227 works well too.  It seems that .38 specials and .357mags also like to speed.  I loaded about 750 .38 specials to take to the shoot last week for Patty and I to shoot in our Handis.  I did some lite loads with TiteGroup running 850 fps, and they wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside.  Another batch with the same 158 gr. cast bullet  and 296 running about 150 feet faster was dead nuts on and consistent.  The same held true with the .357 mags.  I loaded some down around 900 fps, and they wouldn't do squat till I got them up around 1300 fps.

I saw no decrease in accuracy with .38s and mags after reaming to maxi.  Go ahead and ream it, you'll like it.

Thinking of trying W296 in place of my 28gr. 1680 loads with 180 SSP bullets. Anyone use a heavy load of 296?

Never used 296 but I believe the current verision is the same as H110.  I have only loaded to a max. of 21 grains with H110 and 180 grain jacketed bullets.  There is data published on ammoguide that has loads up to 24 grains w/180 grain jacketed.  I have seen others post loads of H110 in the 357 Max w/180 grain bullet in the 21 to 23 grain range.  The 21 grain limit for the 180 grain bullet is from Hodgdon's website and is pistol data.

I've used heavy loads of H110 with the SSP,they have a tendency the explode, not a lot of penetration.

21.0 gr. of H110 gives me 1880 fps and 1" groups at 100 yds. with my Talo Trapper and 2.5x scope.

With 21gr H110, I get 1975 fps out of a 180gr XTP
I went a little beyond 21gr of H110, I get 2100 fps with 180gr XTP, seating long to the first crimp ring

If I may be so bold as to suggest a true Keith Style, 173 grain cast lead bullet, from Beartooth Bullets!   ;D

The other alternative is a 185 grain gas checked cast lead bullet from Beartooth Bullets. I'm getting ready to load both of these for range testing.
