« on: July 29, 2011, 08:35:09 AM »
I have a few 45-70 barrels so I figured I would like one as a shorty if I cut it to 16.5" how would the accuracy still be on it

Barrel length does not really effect accuracy. Having said that your gun make not like your pet load as much as it used to, or it may like it more. The rule of thumb is if it was accurate before it will be accurate after. A bad crown will ruin accuracy.

Jason,

As Shu said you got do a proper recrown, which means the muzzle must be square to the bore when you recrown.   The shorter barrel will make a little more noise and you will loose a little bit of velocity but your gun will be much more Handi. ;)   Read the FAQs on recrowning and barrel cutting, but IMO it is so easy a caveman can do it.  I have a 45-70 and 30-06 that I cut and recrowned myself and both work fine.  If you do it yourself you might want to make it a little longer than 16.5" in case you have to correct a mistake. (I am assuming your are not a g-smith or machinist, if you are my apologies for the last statement)

Mine is cut to 18 in.  Accuracy is at least as good as before, but be ready for some horrendous muzzle blast.  And the crown is super important, as stated.

Velocity loss was mentioned.

I have a BC in 45-70 with the 32" (?) barrel length and a TC with a 16" barrel.  Don't remember the load or velocities but the bullet was a 405 grain.  Over the same chronograph on the same day the BC shot the load 300FPS faster than the 16" TC.

I really expected more of a velocity loss but that's what it was.

All of my levers are 18.5" or 16.25" and ported from factory. All of them are more accurate than I am. ;D

Here is my 45/70 @ 18.5"

1895gunner, welcome to the other side of the Marlin family.  Guess alot of us are having problems logging onto MO's today.  With the 45-70 loaded with gentle to the shoulder loads, you won't see a large percentage of velocity loss.  Many times accuracy will improve due to less barrel "whip" as the bullet travels through.  May have to work up a new load, or you may not have to, won't know until you try.  As 1895gunner said, some of us like em short and loud. ;) ;D   DP
