« on: November 03, 2010, 04:31:06 AM »
i now have the urge to have  one

i really like my 357 mag...and mostly shoot 38s
357  MAX  seems to be  the perfect  cast bullet round,...and  i like to cast my own
can  you suggest a better  cast bullet round????

it is an  SB-1  frame
am  i correct ...this  is  a  no no??

should i fit my barrel to an sb-2 frame
or just try all  my sb-2 frames till i find one that fits???

do they  make the 357 mag on  sb-2 frame  anymore???

should  i just get  a 30-30  or  444......[other  want to haves]
or  just use  my 44mag  or 45-70s  if i need more power

[ i wonder  how  many ''all  of the  aboves''  i will get]

I'll be the first to say " all of the above"
If it were me I would try to see if it would fit a sb-2 frame just for the pice of mind.
You know you wont be happy till you get the 30-30 or 444 or both.

I don't cast, so I can't help you with the first one.  I can tell you reaming to Max didn't change accuracy with .38s and mags in mine.  My shortie Maxi wears an Allen 9 round butt stock cartridge holder.  That contains 3 of each, maxi, mag and .38.  It's my go to farm/truck gun.

The SB1 frame is not a no no.  You can use it as long as you don't go wild.  I have all my centerfire rifles on SB2 frames.

I swapped frames, and swapped frames, and now I have one spare SB2 and 11 rifles, and none need tinkering.

No, they don't make a .357 SB2.

I'd add the .30-30, but if you've got the .45-70, do you really need a .444?  But, if you've got the time and bucks, why not?

In a perfect world we would have one of each of whatever we want.............
In my world, and maybe yours, with the 45-70 I would pass on the .444 (and that works the otherway around too).
If I had the .357 I would keep my eye out for a really good deal on a 30-30, but wouldnt feel bad if I never found one. I would also find out just how long a case my .357Mag chamber would take. Some are considerable long and I like to fill the chamber with brass even if Im using a download. Or, use the .357 brass and as long and heavy a bullet as I could in that chamber length. It might work with a 180ish rather than a 158. With all the powder selection now, you should be able to find a powder that pretty much fills the case to bullet base and gets a healthy amount of velocity. Well more than my cast bullets want, thats for sure.

trimming the  MAX  brass  till  it fit  my handi chamber
but  not fit  other 357 [hopefully]
and  just bump  the power  up a little  was a thought too
my cast mold  is LBT WFN gc....185 grains
[also 280 grain 44 mold....444 made more since than reaming  a 44mag]

is there  some cartridge  between  the  MAX  and  magnum???
or  is  my memory failing?

The 360 Dan Wesson is between the Mag and the Max in length. My 357 chambered the 360 brass just fine without any reaming. It would give you a gain over the mag but brass is hard to find and it's just to easy and inexpensive not to ream to Max. I did mine as soon as Tim's reamer was available.

You can sorta get a "factory" 357 on the SB-2 frame. I sent my SB-2 frame to H&R and they fitted a 357 Mag barrel which they marked SB-2. Thanks to Tim's super reamer deal, I was able to ream out the 0.3" needed to go to the Maxi.
Like I said, "sorta"...

1 i now have the urge to have  one. Then GO FOR IT!!

2 i really like my 357 mag...and mostly shoot 38s
357  MAX  seems to be  the perfect  cast bullet round,...and  i like to cast my own
can  you suggest a better  cast bullet round????Better? that's a personal issue. its a good one and  you will find some recipes if you look for Contender loads form the early 1980's.

3 it is an  SB-1  frame
am  i correct ...this  is  a  no no??YES all current 357's are on a SB1 frame. SO WHAT!!  Unless your the type that has to push the envelope with top hand loads. The maxi will work just fine in a SB1 frame. Your use as a cast shooter makes this a non issue.

4 should i fit my barrel to an sb-2 frame Up to you
or just try all  my sb-2 frames till i find one that fits??? OK  ::) ;D

5 do they  make the 357 mag on  sb-2 frame  anymore???NO

6 should  i just get  a 30-30  or  444......[other  want to haves]

[ i wonder  how  many ''all  of the  aboves''  i will get] [quote/]

Mine is an original 158. I shoot it allot of my hand load SSP 180 bullet with AA1680 powder. Its a GREAT handi caliber, I think you will enjoy it!
