ya Know...
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:20:37 PM »
being as this is the "NEF/H&R Centerfire Rifle" forum, I thought that I'd mention that I've a couple that aren't Handi's......
First up is a 1954 manufactured Harrington & Richardson M1 Garand that I purchased through the CMP several years back.  It had a bit of a mangled muzzle, a Springfield Armory stock and bolt, but the rest is H&R.  Off the bags at a hundred with Frankford Arsenal 1959 National Match ball, it does about an inch and a half.  Figure to take this one to Perry, if I can ever find the means and wherewithal to get there.
Second is another 1954 H&R that I picked up for my Dad from CMP, also.  It's a 'service grade', meaning it's an "A" condition asset that could've been issued for combat use.  This one, though, other than some insignificant 'rack rash', is a complete, correct, and original H&R.  Perfect bore, but we've yet to get it on the bags yet.
I've two others, but they probably belong in the rimfire forum, a couple of Model 65 'Leathernecks'.  Both complete with the Redfield rear sights, two mags apiece, and brother, do they shoot!!!
How's about the rest of you?  I KNOW that H&R made or marketed a BUNCH of other centerfire rifles, besides Handi's!!!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Hey Darreld, I would like to find one of the Redfields since my Leatherneck is missing his.... they are great shooters like you said. I was able to borrow a sight, but had to let it go back to the owner....... My M1 is a Feb. 42 Winchester.

Man, I don't know what to tell you about a sight.  That might be a tough one!  I'd love to find a couple of long slide 1/8 minute Lyman's for a couple of '03's, but those things have got mighty dear these days.

When I was working in the gun shop, a kid came in, rings in his eyebrows, lips, dandy lookin' nose stud, and a ladder of rings in his ear, black leather and his "ol' lady" as he described her, was dressed up with black lipstick, spikey hair, well, you get the idea....he says he wants to unload his Grampa's rifle, needs 'gas money', and pulls a 1943 dated Inland carbine and a half dozen mags out of a canvas case.  HE set the price, at $125.00.  One of those days where I put blisters on my hands pulling cash out of my pocket!
Several years back, a sporterized Winchester carbine came in, at a mighty friendly price, and I used all of my 'allowance', and a bit more out of the checking account to take it home.  I had to think fast when I went through the front door with the little gem, as the wife, who I thought was out for the afternoon scrapbookin' with the daughters, was sitting on the couch reading a book.....first words outta my piehole was "Look what I got for ya".  I'll be darned if she didn't snatch the bolt back, lock it down, check the chamber, looked at "Winchester" on the back shelf, and put it away!  Ever once in awhile, she'll allow me to shoot 'her' gun........

H&R also made M14's.  I got some H&R parts on a few M1A's.

Not an H&R but an absolute 99% 1942 Springfield fired but 15 times. A military collector looked at it one day and told me it was the finest specimen he had ever seen outside of a museum.

I am not a collector or even a fan of the old military guns have not been bit by that bug yet .But I do pick them up and look them over as one time I had one in my hand that was a 30/40 Krag H&R can't tell you what gun it was as I do not know the military stuff very well.Bad thing was it was in very bad shape... it did put the notion in my head though that the first military gun I will buy will be a H&R manufactured Gun.
