I can't see pics on my phone.  Does this serve the same purpose as the rubber oring?  If so, why is it better than the rubber?

Nice grab CW!!  ;)

The spacer is the "shoe" that is attached to the rear of the forend, it's made of steel instead of the current plastic piece, they came on some old H&Rs.

are the steel spacers the same dimensions as the plastic ones?    If so I have an idea for a weekend project and I will be casting up some in brass for my 45/70.

Yes, they used to be available from H&R for $30, trigger guards were $40, but they were discontinued, I think the only H&R1871 firearms they've ever been offered on were the Wesson & Harrington 38-55s. Talley is tooling up to make them as we type tho, see the FAQs.

Congrats to you. I was able to score a new machined steel one that is a perfect fit and a bronze one that looks great and will be going on my color case sb1 frame
