Handi rifle success . . .
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:56:20 AM »
My hunting buddy, my nephew (he's really a (much) younger cousin) has killed 5 deer over the last two years with his Handi .223.  He killed three does last year (age 6) and has killed two, a three point and an eight point, this year at the ripe old age of seven.  I, meanwhile, am skunked.  Guess I'm going to have to leave him at home so I can shoot one, lol.   We're hunting on family land in Louisiana. That's the eight point.

Don't leave him at home Natty, I'm sure he'll share some meat with you for taking him!
Nice buck!

GOOD SHOOTING!

What load are you using in the .223 ? I've not had a chance to try mine on deer.

G-- damn son ! That makes an old man feel good. Give your nephew my congradulations. That boy is going to grow up to be a real deer hunter.Ain't nobody gonna BS him about what deer hunting is all about.Or how to go about it neither. He knows. later in life he'll be able to track a bee thru a cornfield. God bless him.

I use 25.4 grains IMR 3031 and 55 grain .224 Nosler Ballistic Silvertips. I shot a 170 lb 10 pointer last season and had a complete pass through both front shoulders. Broke both clean. These bullets do not disintegrate on bone impact.

This season I picked up factory Hornady V Max 55 grains to try. TOOOO much overtime to hunt yet though.

PS
.223 is awesome deer, hog, ..., hell even elephant gun. I have never shot anything with this rifle that has not been recovered easily. My largest is a 275 lb boar.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

How the heck old do you have to be to get a big game license in LA?
The legal age is 16 here in NY. :-\

Not sure about Louisiana, but Indiana if you can take and pass the saftey course, you can have a license. I seen a little boy(6-7) take and pass the test. Personaly I think it should have a limit, but I will not complain we have enough gun laws.

In Alabama I am pretty sure kids of all ages can enjoy the hunting experience as long as they have a licensed adult with them. You can take the hunter's ed. test and get the license at 16 I think.

In Louisiana, you have to take a hunter ed course to get a hunting license.  You have to have a hunting license at age 16.  Prior to 16, you don't need a license, but you have to hunt with a licensed hunter (and use their tags).  He's never alone in the woods.  He's always sitting next to me or his grandfather, shooting all the deer and using our tags, lol.  No, I'm not going to leave him at home, at this point (age 51) it's more about the hunting than the killing, anyway.  I get as much a kick or more out of watching him than I would shooting myself.

RIGHT ANSWER!  It IS all about the hunting and not the killing.  I hunt for meat other than varmits and yodel dogs.  I hunted for 5 days and saw more than 20 deer a day before taking a dry doe for my first deer.  Then took my 15 year old boy out and let him do the shooting.  The time together hunting was worth much more than meat that weekend.  DP
