Savage 30-30 325-C scope question
« on: May 08, 2009, 07:45:36 AM »
I searched through the forums and couldn't find anything, but here's what I've got and what I'm looking to do:

I've got a Stevens / Savage 325-c 30-30. I'm not sure how old it is as my pop doesn't recall when he first picked it up.

http://www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/Savage_340.htm

I'd like to mount a scope on it, but I have two problems:
First, it looks like I'll have to find a good gunsmith to tap some holes for a side mount. I have the two holes for what appears to be a peep mount on the rear, but not the four holes referred to by the above website.

Second, my local shop didn't even know where to pick up a side mount scope any more.

This is a nice rifle, and one I'd like to use more often, but with the crappy old steel sights, it just isn't useful at realistic ranges.

So I don't know what my next step in first finding whether it's /possible/ to mount a scope on this rifle is, and second, where to go to get one. I think I can find a less local gunsmith who will do the job, but before I take it to someone I don't know and trust, I'd like to know if others out there think this will be a good or bad idea.

Receiver is hard to drill, but can be done. B-Square makes a 1-piece weaver style mount. There is another two piece mount with a base plate and base made by Weaver. You can check it out at Midway USA Shooting Supplies.

That's great! I read the reviews and it looks like the more expensive one is the one that actually works well (isn't it always?).

But I wasn't even sure this product existed and wasn't looking forward to trying to figure out a custom mount.

I still need to find a quality gunsmith to actually mount this sucker (holes will have to be drilled and tapped as mentioned, and probably have to remove some of the stock around those holes to get a proper fit), but I hear good things about Prairie Arms which is only about 30 miles from me.

Thanks for the quick and accurate response!

Johnlocke,  I have that same 325C with the Weaver side Mt. and a Bushnell Banner 4x. It's worked great.  The bottom of the mt. has to fit down into the stock slightly so some wood has to be removed.  The main thing about a side mt. is getting the holes in line with the bore
so your elevation is centered.
