Hodgdon reloading data center lists a max charge out of a pistol with a 125 gr. bullet doing 1960 fps. at 41,400 CUP. You shoot that out of a carbine, and it's gonna do 2276 fps at 41,400 CUP out of an 18" barrel, though it'll probably do slightly better out of a 16" barrel, which seem to be optimal. This is very slightly less than what a 130 gr. bullet will do out of a .30-30 by about 300 fps..

For the weight savings of carrying .30-30 ammo vs. .357 ammo in a pack or on a belt for an extended period of time, I'd rather carry the .357, as it shows some real advantages. If you're using a model '92 rifle, it's gonna be lighter, kick less, use less powder, use cheaper brass, and have a shorter lever throw.

Once you go up to 158 gr., however, the disparity REALLY grows; somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 fps faster in the .30-30. If you're afraid you'll run into large predators or want to hunt large game, bigger than a deer, or farther than ambush distance, I'd definitely go with the .30-30.

DANG! For what they charge, you could setup for reloading CHEAP! at $80.01/50 rounds, for the cost of 200 rounds  you could get a Press , a set of dies, a pound of powder, a scale, a thousand primers, and 300 XTP jacketed bullets!

Careful, there, 1000 primers now cost around $35?

, it would leave the bbl faster allowing less time for the shooter to mess up the shot so if range was 100 yards the 2 deer might end up as dead but one may get to that point in a quicker and more humane fashion .

Shootall,

I see what you are saying, but if I want to shoot two deer, I'll just stick to taking two shots. So far, my 200gr. XTP's over 24.4gr. of N-110 kill things just fine out to 100 yards. And I'm not kickin the snot out of my gun, the shooting is enjoyable, and the game still ends up dead quick. Unless I screw the pooch and don't put the shot in the right place. But that wouldn't matter if I were shootin my 44 mag, or my 45-70 405 grain at 20 yards. If I hit the whitetail in the hoof, it's gonna be a looooonnnnng blood trail.

I have reloaded my own .44 mag. ammo now for about the last 20 years,  a buddy of mine asked me a question that I was kind of out of touch on factory ammo to answer. He has a S&W model 29 and he was wondering if all factory loaded ammo was safe for it? I honestly did not have that answer. Is there
any factory ammo that any of you know of that would be too hot for his M29 .44 Mag?

Well, if you want to shoot some really HOT factory loads, find some of these!!

A 158gr .357 at over 2100fps and a 150gr. at 2300'ish from a .30-30 is pretty close considering weight-velocity-and subsequent energy. I wouldn't discount either for the deer or hog woods. But yes, the Buffalo Bore prices are very high per round. But after sighting-in if they are only used for live targets it isn't so bad. I have been very pleased with the Buffalo Bore .38's I bought. 40 rounds(two boxes) for $56 out the door. I think I paid around $44 for the 50rd box of Remington's I bought a year ago. I feel the $12 is worth it. Corbon has been around for a while with similar prices and load good stuff. I liked their standard pressure .38 110 DPX but they stopped production since the longer copper bullet would sometimes destabilize from a snub so now it is only +P. But, I will add, that I like the Buffalo Bore offering even better so I'll stick with that.

Drilling Man - are those the 180 grain 'Light Up The Night ' loads???  I think the last box of Super Vels I purchased, oh so many years ago, was their 180 grain stuff.  It was a hoot to shoot, esp at night - one shot and that was it until your eyes re-adjusted (lololol).

I think I may still have one of those 'yeller' boxes around.

Good quality ammo at a reasonable price, and a very helpful guy.
