Van Horn barrels for handi rifles
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:09:03 AM »
I saw on the TC link that Van Horn makes tc barrels , someone said handi barrels too..
I couldn't find a Van Horn webb sight..
Do most folks have good luck with H&R barrels, and I only hear about the unhappy ones?
Or should I just buy a second handi to get the barrel? ???

Green Mountain use to make some for NEF/H&R ,  but if memory serves me correctly Marlin took up making H&R barrels. Remington evidently has a new hammer forge set up to start running barrels but isn't online yet from what I hear.
Don't know much about Van Horn...

Here's the Van Horn website, nothing there about H&Rs and I've never seen one mentioned here.

Dave Vanhorn has made several Custom TC barrel over the past 25 years. His workmanship is excellent. He has also made several Custom Rifles for my Family. He buys his TC Lug assy. from TC and then welds his barrels for the completed unit. If he can get the Handi-Rifle Lug he can make a custom barrel that is far superior to the Handi/Remington barrel. The last Rifle he built for me was with a ER Shaw match barrel, it is a 22 Hornet on a 24" rifle barrel. One of my TC Rifles is shown on his web-site. It is a 270 Ingram (223 necked-up to 270) and is stocked with a Left-Hand Harry Lawson one hole rear stock with matching for-piece. This piece shoots a sub-MOA group with a 90 ga. Sierra HP varmit 270 spitzer. This is very close to the 6.8mm SPC Remington.

Contact him, with your requirements. If he does the work it will be the most accurate Handi you will own. ;)

OK, thanks very much,   don't think H&R would sell him lugs,  but I'll call  Van Horn this week,,
The  H&R  lug should be less work to make,,, but I bet there not eager for work
                                                        Thanks again   DanLee

should be no problem to get a lug, just buy the cheapest used shotgun barrel you can find and use the lug from it....<><....:)

I called Van Horn    and  good news  they make very good shooting  handi rifle barrels.  you have to send them the receiver  and for $425 you'll have a completed barrel ..

Most any Cal.  that will work on the frame  (wildcats  Cal. too)..

He said that he just made a  Handi 22 - 250  barrel  that out shoots the   rem. or winchester bolts  action of the handi's owner.

Thanks for the good  input and help . There page has nicelooking guns

I need to supercharge my piggy bank   --I want a tackdriver wildcat  handi !!

That's actually not a bad price if that includes the donor underlug and barrel blank. Stubs cost $250-$300 plus the donor underug and barrel blank. Rebores/rechambers run about the same plus the cost of the original barrel.

That is very interesting. I still long for a 6.5x30-30, just because.120 gr NBT at 2800 is a killer combo.   Doug

Consider a .225 Winchester chambering, it would make a great Handi Custom barrel. ;)

Dave has the reamer and has done many TC's in the caliber.

I called today and they need a  donar lug --- and it take about 6 week for Van Horn. to make a handi barrel.

So when I send the receiver in to get my .357  -I'll get a extra  shotgun barrel too.

Am I right to asume It take about the same time  to get multiple as one barrel ?

I read that other shops do barrles from stubs also.

By far, sending it in to H&R is the lowest cost for new ... But I think I'd like a costom barrel.

For a total cost of $500.00 I hope they put a really really good barrel on it!  Larry

Turn around time will depend mainly on barrel availability, some have got orders back in 30 days, others have been waiting for several months.

With Green Mountain having made barrels for the NEF/H&R - why not give them a call and see what they have or can do.  Personally, the GM barrels on my BC are nothing but pure accuracy
