H&R vs. TC Encore
« on: January 11, 2009, 03:23:29 PM »
I have a TC Encore and have had good luck with it but the cost of an Encore barrel is almost or more than the cost of a new handi rifle. Plus changing barrels on the range is a little bit of a pain. I guess my question is should I stop buying Encore barrels and start buying Handi Rifles?

I went through my encore phase with a couple frames and close to a dozen factory and custom barrels. I learned rather quickly that the accuracy of these rifles is grossly overrated. To put it bluntly they shoot like crap. I got into encores after being so disappointed by the hit or miss accuracy of some of my Handi rifles only to learn that if anything your average encore barrel is even less accurate. It's one thing when your $220 handi shoots 3" groups but it's quite another when a $800 Pro hunter does no better

So yes unless you need a magnum chambering you're doing nothing but wasting money selecting an encore over a handi, For crying out loud a 12ga shotgun bbl costs $300 for the price of ONE Encore shotgun bbl you could have a complete single shot shotgun collection chambered in ALL the common gauges

Baer,

I also own an Encore and several H&Rs...............I can say the Handis are fun to own guns.  Well made, at a reasonable cost, that adds up to value to me.  They probably are a little easier to change barrels on than the Encore, but most of the guys here just buy a whole gun.

My stainless Encore 7mm08 is a beauty and does shoot well for..................$700 give or take a little.  However my 308 Handi bull with Cinnamon lam thumbhole doesn't look shabby at half the price or less.

I got rid of all my encore stuff a few yrs ago and now have 28 H&R's. I do not regret it one bit. Biggest problem was trying to not loose my keester selling the encore stuff. Kurt

Are there any other chamberings for the Handi Rifle other than whats listed on their web sight? I've read about a few on this forum that are not listed such as the 35 Whelen for example. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks, Mike

The .35 Whelen was discontinued.  This site has all kinds of info on factory barrels or custom ones.  You can put together about everything you want except the big magnums.

Just out of curriousity, on average how much does a custom H&R barrel go for? I really like the price of a factory barrel compared to an Encore.

About $300 for either a stub or rebore, plus the cost of the original barrel or donor stub and barrel blank, do a search for custom barrel. The Encore is a stronger frame so magnum rifle chamberings are possible with it, not so for the H&R.

I say both.
Finish getting what you need in the encore.
Small game(22LR with open sights), Varmint (223 or 22-250 with 6-24X scope), Big game (308 or 30-06 with 3-9X40 scope), and 20ga. shotgun tube for the encore.  That way you can go anywhre with one gun case and hunt everything there.  After that I would get the H&R's to fill in the cool stuff inbetween and make dedicated pig, brush, pronghorn, bear, and what ever guns.
