Red Dots on a Super Blackhawk Hunter
« on: October 29, 2008, 02:30:46 PM »
Anyone use a red dot sight on their SBH?

Pro's? Con's?

Any Pictures?

Currently I have a 4x Leupold but have been considering a red dot.  The main use for the gun is hunting eastern whitetails.  While the scope is good, I have trouble some times picking up the target in the scope.  All of my shots would be under 75 yards, with most inside 50.

The one below isn't the hunter model, but may give you an idea.
Pros; quick target acquisition less concentration of lining sight up generally no paralex issues
cons; no magnification
The sight I have used for 10+ years with no problem is a millet sp1. A lot of reports of the newwer cheap dot scopes is they can only handle rimfire recoil. I don't know, never owned one. Try to get the smallest dot you can, so less target is covered. The sp1 is 3 mil.
As for red dots, I currently have a vector strikeforce on an ar 15 and it does well out to 400 yards on silohets. So in other words the sights are more accurate than the shooter. As a general rule since there usually isn't any or much maqnification they are extremely clear.
One more thing battery life. On the sp1 I left it on for a week one time and it still worked. I left it on for a few months and the battery was shot. In the 10 or 12 years I'm on the second battery, which isn't bad. The new vortex says it's good for 2000 hours on high.

Only problem you might have is ring spacing. Alot of the red dots that are out there are set up specifically for a weaver rail. I don't think they would fit the Ruger factory system. At best you may have to get special sized rings if the sight would fit with the ring spacing. Another option would be to put an adapter rail on. Just check it out first.

I believe that Weigand makes this rail with the mounting set up specifically for the existing grooves of the SBH Hunter.

I have a weigan rail in mine, with a Holosight. My only gripe is it puts the sight too far forward, the way the gun is made

I have not used them for hunting or on my Rugers, however, I have UltraDot 30's on three handguns and really like them. The UltraDot comes with tube extensions rings which screw on the objective end which may help alleviate the ring spacing problem. You can also buy offset rings.

I have a Aimpoint 9000sc on my SRH with the Wiegand Combat rail.  I love it.  I had to save a bit to get the 2moa Aimpoint but is the item.  I feel like I am cheating.  I had a 2x scope on it and I definitely prefer the red dot.

Sounds like I may need a rail if I go the red dot route.

DGrig- do you happen to have a picture of your setup?

Ultra-dot is the way to go. I use them on several on my hunting handguns. Up to my BFR in 500 Mag.
