Problem with the 45-120 shooting lighter bullets fast is twofold for me-

1-Unless I had a scout scope I couldn't shoot the 45-120 without severe danger to my eye socket, and a scout scope isn't that good for shooting too far.  Also the gun is still gonna kick like a biatch, they say you don't feel it when hunting, but I guarantee you think before you touch off the 45-120 from prone.

2-The BC on those light bullets stink!  Unless you like bigtime wind drift and your bullets slowing down fast, the 400 and above grain bullets are where the 45-120 shines.  The heavier TSX's have good BC's, but I still don't know how you are going to take advantage of that.

Conceivably you could put a brake on the 45-120, but I'm not sure how much it will help since the cartridge is low pressure.

Impressive speed but still needs quite a bit of hold over at the longer ranges even with a 2" zero at 100.
OH well, just a thought!

...made in '88... Is it as strong as the newer ones?

No, it's not,

Thanks Tim, I figured that was the case.  I have to keep reminding myself that this is a "fun gun" and there is nothing practical about it!    :-\  Kind of like a show bike.  Sure you can ride it, but all tricked out it really isn't suited for serious motoring!   :D

I never even checked the H site for data.  Strange, I usually do.  Thanks for reminding me!  L-T ought to look at their 50-140 data!   :o  http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

I think Tyke has the right idea.  I'll probably stick with heavy hard cast bullets for my fun gunnin.  But I can't wait to see what it does with Rem 405's...  ;)  Matter of fact, Ima gonna load some 300's and 405's up rite now for the BC barrel,   'member my rule, when I gets me a project gun I gots to kill sumpin wiff it before I starts messin wiff it!  So maybe it's a good thing my wife-mate wouldn't let me go huntin this weekend... :(  I got to mount a scope on the new barrel, will sight it in tomorrow then take it hunting next week!  I'm hoping that if I do all my "honey-do's" this weekend she ought to keep quiet for the next few weeks...  ::)

'course I may just be trying to make myself feel better since my hunting partner called this morning to tell me the bucks are running does every which-a-way down on the farm... AND he happened to mention that he just killed the biggest buck he has ever shot in his life!  ::)   >:(  :'(

The Rem 405gr was one of the first bullets I loaded, the other was a 500gr Montana Precision Swaging bullet loaded over a case full of 777 cuz I had it, it shot good, but I decided at the cost of it, smokeless was the way to go. Next load was the 405gr Rem over 5744 using Accurate data, I had learned on the 777 range trip that it shot way low at 50yds and that I needed a lower front sight, the OEM  .584" 17A sight was just too tall, I contacted H&R and they said sent it in, didn't want to do that cuz it was rechambered, so I just bought a .404" 17A sight for it. Next trip to shoot it was 1½" high at 100yds with the FP-TK sight bottomed out using the 405gr/5744 load, group was 1½", in fact, my huntin buddy was with me, he shot the last two rounds of the 5 shots in that same group!!

Please print or save the data file below, it's not on their site any more, but it's still active for now.

Need some bullet specs, there are no .512" bullets listed in QL.

2 inch long 700 grain sound about right for .512?  I'm just guesstimating here.  Should get 2100-2200 fps?

Benchmark at 79% load density should get you 1979fps in a Ruger No1 24" barrel.

Man that's weak.

What would a 32" barrel do?

We could beat the pants off that weak 500 NE stuff with the 45-120 and 400 grain TSX bullets!

Can you still shoot 45-70 loads in the reamed out 45-120?  Or are you limited to the new caliber?

It can etch the chamber and accuracy won't be that great.

That said I have shot my 45-70 round ball loads through my 45-120 to see how much quieter a 32" barrel is than 18.5", and the result was not much quieter but hit harder.

Ahh shucks.  It would have been an easy sell if I could have still shot the 45-70 bullets in it.  Its still mighty tempting anyway.

They are a bad influence aren't they?  ;D  Bad in a good way ;D
