Barnes now makes a 123 grain triple shock designed for the 7.62x39.  Not cheap, yet as with the .223, this bullet no doubt puts this cartridge in well into deer territory.  That said, I believe that the 7.62x39 was already there.

The Barnes triple shock sounds like a good option.
I was reading about the hollow-points and have found them to act very similar to FMJ rounds.

I used cheap Russian Barnaul SP's before in an SKS and they were just crap. Got rid of the SKS years ago and haven't even considered a 7.62x39 since....not for me or for a youth round, but that's just me.

7.62X39 should work well being almost a 30/30..

BTW: My grandson, as his unit's designated sniper and armorer, built his own .223 sniper rifle..he didn't shoot to wound...

7.62x39 almost terminated me in Nam. Guy was a sniper and making head and heart shots on several GIs. Missed my head but not by much. Dumby was using tracers so I could get an idea where he was. I played dead but radioed his location and a guy on the other side of the perimeter knocked him out of a tree. I guess I'll probably never try that caliber.
