Buffalo Classic
« on: February 07, 2008, 11:39:28 AM »
I saw a Buffalo Classic a few days ago and it has me thinking.  What kind of loads is it good for?  Do I have to stick with Trapdoor level loads, or will it work with more powerful loadings?

Also, what can I expect to pay for one?

If this has been answered before I am sorry.  I did a quick search but it didn't yield anything.

Thanks!

If it was made '99 or later, the frame of the BC is the same SB2 frame that's on the rest of the Handirifles including the .270, 30-06 and .500S&W if that tells you anything, it will handle anything your shoulder can handle and most likely considerably more, if you know what I mean and aren't immune to recoil.  ;D  Unless you take some measures to reduce felt recoil  like a slip-on pad, mercury suppressor and such, the steel butt plate and light weight are not user friendly with any loads much above trapdoor.  ;)

With the BC stock and metal buttplate, it will take much more than you want to take.  I think they are the best looking stock that H&R has but it is best used for medium loads and down and not too many medium loads...  I use mine for mild lead bullets loads because that is the most fun.

When I had mine I pushed a 400gr Speer to over 2000fps.  After about 6 rounds of that I'd had enough.  Don't know how the 458 lott guys can handle it.  That thing will sure get your attention with loads like that.

So, are you guys saying it may kick a little more than my other Handi (223 stainless/synthetic)?

The heavy stuff like the 458 Winny and Lott aren't that bad in a properly designed rifle.   My 135lb 5'-10" 16yo cousin can shoot 1 & 5 gal cans/buckets of paint and water most of the day with a 460Wby Mag.

We usually run out of ammo and/or targets before any of us have had too much.   With the BC's, the steel buttplate is the biggest offender.  But that can be dealt with by using some padding.  I dont think the recoil is all that much even with lower Ruger #1 loads(not recommended for everyone), its just that edges of that steel plate cutting into you.

I saw one in a store today and know I need one.  It won't be that one.  His price was a hair under $500.  I found several internet stores that can get me one for under $350 shipped.  I bet I can find a local FFL for less than $150.
