Why are barrels so HIGH on eBay?
« on: December 13, 2006, 03:53:05 PM »
I've looked at some of the prices people are paying for common, handi rifle barrels. Many are $30-40+ more than the barrel accessory program.  And shipping is $15 or so.

Am I missing something?

Think I'd much rather buy one from the program or from this site!

Because people are either ignorant or just don't want to go to the trouble or wait when sending a frame in for an acc barrel.

Quickdtoo is absolutely right about ignorant people,The people buying these barrels have no concept of whats involved fitting the barrel to a frame not intended for an off the wall barrel, some sellers suggest fitting the barrel by a gunsmith, the cost of a smith fitting the barrel often exceeds the cost of the barrel providing the smith knows what he/she is doing.I watched a 7mm08 barrel come up on evilbay 3 times by 3 different sellers, apparently the barrel did not fit the 3 owners frame so back on evilbay it went.Another point to keep in mind is the description being given-EXAMPLE-Unfired barrel,Excellent condition,Tack driver,(UNFIRED???????)comes from a SMOKE FREE and PET FREE home and has been GENTLY USED.Hate to part with it but need money for a NEW BARREL.DAAAHHHHH,whats wrong with this picture?

Not all pepole selling on e-bay are dis-honest...and I am quite sure some of them do know how to fit a barrel to a frame...We have many members here that sell on e-bay..and I do know several of them...so..depending on who is selling it..if they say it's a tack driver..or a new take off barrel..I can believe them..I normally don't buy from that site..but..I do know if it is anything but as is advertised..I can stop payment to them..and recoop my money..

I'm not saying the evilbay sellers are dishonest, the point here is that H&R has a program to custom fit their barrels to your frame for shootability and saftey, the idea of just slapping on a non fitted barrel is like playing Russian Roulette.aside from a very few people on this site who actually know how to fit a barrel, some people think all he/she has to do is lock and load that is NOT the way its done.

There's more than a few folks here that know how to fit a barrel...All one has to do...for the majority of problems encountered with our Handi's is to read the FAQ's...Right this minute...there is 167 Guest on this site and 70 members...here on this forum...we have 7 members and 9 Guest...What make's you think...these fine folks can't or don't read everything here?...We get a-lot of folks who never join or post here...and they do look at the FAQ's...We also get folks coming here after buying one of these barrels...to learn how to do it as well...Also...it is always possible to get one to fit perfectly on another frame...I agree...it can be dangerous if they don't know what their doing...but I won't ever assume they are all stupid and don't know what they are doing...A-LOT of them...I would bet...but...not all of them...And yes..some folks are less than honest in their descriptions of the barrels...but...like I said...We have members here...that sell items over there...and the ones I know...are very honest people..

barrels on auctions
« Reply #9 on: December 14, 2006, 09:40:09 AM »
I have to point out that iamsniper1 does make a point when he points to the listing that claims an unfired barrel is a tack driver.... how the heck does the seller know it is a tack driver if it ain't ever been fired at at tack! Or anything else for that matter. ???

As for the rest of it... caveat emptor (buyer beware) rules at eBay. I have sold a couple of barrels on eBay over the years, sometimes I am surprised by how hight the bidding goes, sometimes, I've been disappointed... so I guess 'seller beware' could apply too (and I don't know the latin for that one  :) ) I don't put a reserve price on anything I sell at an auction, so my starting price is also the absolute minimum I will accept for an item. If I get only the minimum, then it ain't nobody's doin but my own. And when I get a ridiculous price higher than expected, it ain't something I'll complain about.

Personally I have never bought a barrel from eBay, only from the factory, or only from this forum. I have found the occassional deal on stocks or scopes or other accessories, but never felt the need to buy a barrel there.

I've bought a lot of reloading equipment on Ebay, and it's always astounded me that people will pay more for a used set of dies, or a used rock chucker press than what you can buy it for new from one of the big internet retailers....

I guess they get caught up with Ebay fever & just assume they're gettin a good deal, cause they got it off Ebay...  If yer patient, you can get the occasional good deal though....  What I've never understood is the bidding that occurs day's in advance of the acution end.  They're just bidding up the price of the item they're interested in..... ???

Because people will pay 10 cents for a nickle on ebay. I know people who have gotten addicted and spent THOUSANDS on things on ebay. You can find 50-60% of the stuff for sale on ebay, cheaper somewhere else.

I have bought barrels on ebay and the guys I have bought them from post on this site frequently.  I think they buy barrels because it can be a real hassle to send the receiver to the factory. Try to walk into a post office and tell them you have gun receiver you want to ship and see what happens. Another reason to get one on ebay is that you can get that instant gratification that we Americans seem to want. I am not saying that this is good or bad but that is just the way it is. If you have the money and the knowledge to buy a barrel off of ebay and fit it to your receiver than more power to you. Who is to judge. To answer your question about why people pay that kind of money for a barrel on ebay is because they can. I think they also buy the barrels off of ebay is because guys on this forum are more than helpful to teach us  how to fit it to our receivers. This site rocks and guys like Quick make me come back night after night.

Thanks
Jerry

As pharmboy said I would imagine it's alot about not wanting to send your gun in.Ya gotta get it packaged up then if ya don't have a junk/old stock to put on it you think it may come back scratched all to you know what.Probably not but ya hate to see your baby off on her own, even if she ain't a thousand dollar rifle. And ya gotta remember there's a lotta people that don't read this site which anybody that's got a handi or ultra should!!Thanks guys!
