reduced recoil ammo
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:58:44 PM »
Took the .308 to the range today with a box of Remington reduced recoil ammo. Shooting alongside Federal 150gr softpoint factory loads, recoil wasn't substantially less, but muzzle blast was increased. The Remingtons use a 125gr bullet which is claimed to shoot to point of aim with 150gr bullet. They don't. RR load hit roughly 1 1/2" lower at 100 yards. I'll try Federal's low recoil loads in a couple of weeks, but so far they don't live up to the hype.

My Tikka (7mm Rem Mag.) doesn't like them at all.  Two inches lower at 100 yds than Federal's with 160 Accubonds.  The reduced recoil give me a 3 inch group while other factory loads shoot under an inch.  I bought them because I hurt my shoulder this summer, but I won't buy any more.  Jim

jrnsuz,

You diodn't say what type of rifle and barrel legnth you were shooting.  I believe that this would make a bit of a difference.

I am not a salesman nor do I shoot factory loads, but I believe in the concept and would like to see it continue.  The average person can no longer buy a 243, then a 3006 for his child as the child grows up.  One rifle that can be used by both small and large with different ammunition is the best way to go.  People must remember that the reduced recoil round was not designed for 300 yard shooting and a 4" group at a practical distance for this round will get the job done.

Recoil is a product of more than just an equal and opposite reaction.  A rifle designed badly or with a small butt pad area will hurt even if the recoil  force is less.

I think too much is made of recoil. After all, recoil is 85% mental. If a new shooter has been exposed to "propaganda" about "kick" then they will be afraid of the rifle. On the other hand, if the new shooter is brought forward gradually, with an understanding of recoil, much trepedation can be ovevecome. One can simulate recoil by grasping the barrel and gently pushing it back

If this was my spouse, I would bundlel her up with heavy clothing, maybe a  towel for the shoulder, and above all, eye and hearing protection. Moreover, in the beginning, I would not let her shoot more than 3 shot strings, with a substantial wait between strings. I think you will be suprised, as most women have a greater tolerance for recoil than we think.

When I was in the Military, we had female shooters on our team. They handled the M-1 rifle and the 30-06 cartridge quite well.
