Remington UMC Model 24
« on: April 09, 2005, 03:17:54 PM »
Guys:

Came across a UMC Remington Model 24 today...well used, fine patina on the metal and wood is in good shape.  Seems to function well and has been outfitted with a Lyman fold-down peep sight.  Resembles the Browning .22 take-down rimfires of today.

My guess it that it is 50+ years old.  Can you guys tell me a little about it?

Thanks in advance!  ...Chris   :D

Made from 1922 to 1935 came in shorts only or LR only versions. Take down like said it held 15 shorts in that version and 10 LR in that version. 21 inch long barrel and weighed 5 pounds. open rear sight and bead front sight. plain walnut stock and forarm. Newest price guide I have is a Rl. L . Wilson which list the gun as 100 bucks fair, 250 VG and 325 Excellent. Sounds like a interesting rifle and Worth the grab if you can get it for a good price.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Thanks Jim.

The rifle is not a gem by any means and from what I can tell from your post, it's not a collector item either.  With that said, I think I will spend some time and re-finish the gun to bring it back to decent shape.  Always wanted one of those old Browning take-downs anyway...I think this will fill the void in my gun cabinet nicely.

Thanks again!  ...Chris   :D

The Remington 24 is John Browning's .22 auto design, made by Remington during a period when the US imposed a huge tariff on Belgian goods (Belgium was considered then the way we consider China today... a place that was taking jobs from American workers).

It's identical and design and function to the modern-day Browning .22 auto rifle although parts will not interchange.

If the barrel is in good condition it should be a good shooter. Like the Browning, you can adjust the barrel nut to ensure a tight fit between barrel and receiver.

I've had a couple of these go through the shop and the buyers were happy with them. If the condition of your rifle is such that it holds no collector value, why not restore it by refinishing the stock and rebluing the metal?
