405 Winchester
« on: January 09, 2005, 08:57:59 PM »
Anyone out there shooting the 405. Picked up a '95 prior to the deer season last year and have been very impressed. The rifle actually came with an excellent factory trigger and I have been able to get some very good accuracy from it. Need to replace the factory buckhorn with a receiver sight though. Not sure of whick one I will need to go with. I believe the Williams 86 Winchester will work.

I also picked up a 95 in 405 recently. Shot one box of ammo through it and am also impressed. I picked up a Lyman 66WB peep sight for it but then changed my mind and am going to use a different sight. The Lyman sight is NIB, cost me $75. Make an offer if you are interested, otherwise I will eventually eBay it.
I don't always read this list so..

How substantial is the recoil from a 405?  I am looking at building a large bore rifle and I like the ballistics for the 405.   But, I want to evaluate the recoil before I spend the money.

What kind of accuracy?  1 inch group at 100?

Thanks

405 Win recoil

Aside from the obvious fact that recoil is subjective....
The '95 is a light gun shooting a heavy bullet and has a steel buttplate.
If you have a tough shoulder and are already a little punchy, you'll love it.
Seriously...
Shooting offhand it's not unpleasant at all.
Shooting from the bench using an elbow rest position (upper body nearly vertical), it's tolerable for 20 or so rounds. A hand towel folded over the shoulder or a heavy coat helps a lot.
Shooting from a low rest or sandbag at the bench just plain hurts like the dickens! After 2 such shots, I was done for the day.
I wouldn't shoot this gun prone unless whatever I was shooting at was going to hurt me worse than the rifle.
A good recoil pad would make the '95 a fun big-bore gun.
You could always load it down, but what would be the point of a light .405?

i'm hoping to build a .405 on a large frame Martini in the not too distant future. it also works in Lee-Enfields and Ross Rifles.the rim dimensions is the same as the .303 British
