from SA & DA revolvers to various barrels for my Contender. Every thisg from custom rugers in 41 magnum, 44 magnum, and 45 long colt to Barrels in 30-30 and 45/70 for my Contender. I also have a nice Dan wesson 357 and a sweet S&W 44 magnum 629. And we won't go into the various guns that could be used for small game. I love handguns and you would if you looked find few long arms in my safe. Just those mainly for competition and a few plinkers and shotguns used for hunting in NJ when I lived there(its all thats allowed there)

I use my 445 supermag Dan Wesson with an 8"barrel and a burrie 2x7.  I love this gun and I favor my DA even though I do shoot SA.

I use from a 586 S&W to a 7.82 Patriot in an Custom XP-100.  Typoically use specialty handguns, but also enjoy the revolvers.

I grew up in Ohio but haven't hunted there for many years.  I know rifles for deer are out, when did they allow handguns?  What's the limits on this?

handirifle,
Ohio opened gun season to handguns in 1986, I got a deer with my .44mag. that year, sold my slug gun and have hunted with a hand gun ever since. The state is broken up into three zones, the zone I hunt in is in the southeast (Noble Co.) usually two deer limit, one buck and one doe, or two doe, you can only take one buck. This year we will have a three deer limit, two doe's and one buck, or three doe's.
As far as limits on handguns, it's 5" minimum bbl. length, and  straight walled handgun cartridges, .357mag. and larger.

handirifle,
I think it was just political BS compromise, 4" gun would be concealable or some such baloney.

Jerry, nice handgun and good job on the deer last year.
I am planning a trip to Ohio this year for Deer hunting, it seems like you guys in Ohio are doing a good job with Deer Management. Here in Vermont they don't seem to get it, thus we take 3 times as many buck each year as doe and everyone wonders why all they seem to see is doe when they go hunting, as well as the bucks are inferior deer as every buck here has a chance to breed, no matter what his size is.
I purchased a new handgun a few months back to hunt with again, i haven't been now for at least 6 years, i hunted with a handgun for 15 years before that. If i am using a firearm i'll take a handgun over a rifle any day, just makes for a better hunt.
The new handgun i got is a SRH 454 Casull, i am in the process of working up a load with my cast bullets, i am using a 300gr GC bullet that i make from a Mountain Molds  softnose mold, i am going to scope it with a Burris 2-7X scope.
Should be great fun.

:-) bowfishn,
Thanks, yes Ohio doe's a pretty good job managing it's deer herd.
My mold for my 500 I also had made by Mountain Molds, I'm really satisfied with it, he does good work.
Good luck on your Ohio hunt, where do you plan on hunting?
ck,
You may be right, but at the time the anti's were raving about somebody carrying a concealed weapon hunting. I don't think it had anything to do with vel., or energy. At any rate we got handgun hunting passed and I'm thankful for that.

I would say this, You've gotten good advice from the folks here, but I would be very careful about taking advice from someone without a stated gender. It just does'nt look good.
You can take my advice! It's the .41 magnum!

Jerry, i'm not really sure of the area as a couple of friends of my buddy were there last year and invited us to go with them this year. They had two bucks in the back of thier truck. One weighed in at 205 and was a ten point, the other was 230 and was a 13 point, both bucks had quite an inside spread and quite long tings. They were using smoke poles and what they described for hunting conditions was like Vermont was before the 60's.
I'll let you know the area after i find out myself.

  Hey SV,
Have you tested much with that rig?
Have you tried any cast bullets with it?
That is a fine looking set-up. I've been thinking about getting a T/C in .308 or 357max. I was one caller too late on a 243 last fall.
The Gobblers are making plenty of noise around here. I hope to score one tomorrow AM.
         Nice group!

RV,
I haven't shot it much yet, tried 3 different powders and like IMR-4895 the best so far. Trying Varget next, Sierra said it was the most accurate powder in the 270 Encore when they tested it. They figure it'll be the best choice in the 25/06 also.

Not going to use cast in either one of these, I usually use cast in 35 caliber and up where expansion isn't really a big deal.

I'd go with the 308 over a 357 Max if you ever think you'll do any long range shooting, 30/06 would really be my first choice. I've shot both 308 and 30/06 in the 15" Encore and recoil seem about the same. ~~ Doug

In centerfire, I've used everything from a .357 Blackhawk with 4.6" barrel on up to a T/C Encore in 308 Winchester with a 1-4x scope.  I finally settled on an open sight Redhawk in 44 mag with a 5.5" barrel.  It's almost always on my hip when I'm in the woods, hunting season or not.  For grouse and such, I use a High Standard Double Nine 22LR, which has fixed open sights.  I've been thinking about replacing the Double Nine, because if it breaks, replacement parts would be mighty hard to come by.  Open sight revolvers with modest barrel lengths provide what I want out of a hunting handgun, but I can certainly understand other points of view.  I've just stopped lugging scoped handcannons that weigh more than some rifles, because in the dense brush and forest where I live, lots of game is taken within spitting distance.

I like the Taurus RB I bought it has the ability to go light or heavy and basically kill anything type of game in north america. I feel that a 44-mag which I used to own for about three years was great for deer but needed to move up am planning an western trip for elk next year.I hope my wife knows she aint going on that cruise... Oops forgot to tell her.ha

Smith & Wesson 629 Classic with a 6 1/2" tube and Herrett stocks. Use it for whitetail deer. Illinois just started letting us use them for deer last season.

I use a Taurus Tracker 4 inch 41 Magnum, its light, accurate, and gets the job done as well as a 44mag. I use it basically as a close range (50yds) weapon and stoke it with 210gr Gold dots using lil'gun powder or Winchester factory Platinum tips. I used to carry an LAR Grizzly 45 Winchester Magnum, but 60oz+ loaded on my hip all day got old.
