TIM! TIM! BLUING TANKS TIM!
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:24:59 AM »
I finally got my burners and have ordered the browner (bluing) from Laurel Mtn Forge.   :D

But I can't find any galvanised gutters locally!   :(  Where did you get yours?

I did find a web site for box shape 24 ga. stainless stuff that looks really nice, but the cost would be around $100   shipping for a 10 ft section and 6 end caps!   :o  I'd rather go with the galvanised...  ;)

Got it at Ace Hardware, go for it, but remember, this is just good for boiling water, anything much hotter might melt the solder on the end caps!  ;)

If Ace doesn't have em, try Home Depot or Lowes, even a gutter service that will make ya some, they might even put the caps on for ya! I can even send ya a 3' piece with caps already soldered on if ya want!  ;)

I would be looking for some small capacity old water heater, or even some used well casing. Even some channel iron.

Galvanized gutter works great and is cheap for a hot water tank and the rust bluing method Richard will be using, it's covered in detail in the octagon barrel projects, only I used Belgian Blue.  ;)

We used a 30 ga. Drum purchased for $5 bucks, cut it in half with an acetylene torch and welded 4 $3 dollar fence posts to it for legs.  ;)  Once everything leveled, used a couple fence posts cut in half to weld across legs to lock height once secured.  If you save the top half and attach to the rear with a steel door hinge welded on, you can close the lid to keep fumes going where you want them & keep heat up.  ;)

Heck, I made a barbecue grill like that back in the day!   ;D

I like Tim's idea because I can have 3 tanks, 12", 26" and 46" is the plan, that can be nested into a small space for storage.  And, using the 3 burner propane gas stove I can just sit them on top of the grill for use.

Hi-ebber, and day always be a hi-ebber,  ;D  All y'all have given me some ideas and reminded me to not become fixed on one solution, ignoring other options!   ;)  never thought of Ace Hardware...  :-[

As an option I can cut the remainder of my gutter into those lengths and ship it to ya for about $16 priority mail.  ;)

Back in the late 50's and early 60's , I used metal chicken feeders for hot blueing. I used 3 of them. 1 for chemicals (Early version of Drano drain cleaner. It gave a finish equal to the 19th century German military finish), 2nd one for water rinse, and the 3rd for a hot oil bath.

Richard try a local sheet metal fab shop . I just had 3 tanks built for a friend ( friend will weld the ends on) metal bent was about 80 bucks for the three . 38 X 6 X6 black steel 22 ga ga . If you can find one with some old duct they can cut and add ends shouldn't be to high.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
