Just don't do like I did quite some years back!

Put a really beautiful/fancy piece of Black Walnut on my old RUGER 77 - Flat Bolt - 243, and now it is so pretty I don't like to get it dinged up.  DUMB MOVE!

Keep the "tupperware" and use/enjoy a really great shoot'in rifle/caliber.

Just loaded up some more test loads with the 55gr Nosler Blastic Tips, so working towards some fuzzy critter loads with this really great shoot'in rifle.

Oldest son kind of put it in a new light when I told him I didn't like to take the rifle out and get it dinged.  He quickly indicated he would when I'm gone.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, but then he dosen't have the many many hours of work in that stock that I do!

Shame to keep such a great shoot'in rifle confined to the gun rack!

Keep em coming!

Anything but a Savage.  You can get a nice Remington 700 for that kind of money.  Don't settle for an off brand.

Probably way to late getting in this one for the OP, but I would have suggested the Remington Model 78 Sportsman as the one to get it done (their 700 action without all the fluff of the ADL or BDL).   I've had both 223 and 243 78's, both as "truck guns" for predator control, and they both shot extremely well for just sporter rifles.   This model was discontinued over 20 years ago, but they come up for sale fairly often, and at prices that will easily fit below the OP's budget.

I think I still have the sights off the 223 - gent that bought it only wanted the scope mounts.   I had an old steel Weaver 3-9 on it, and any coyote that crossed my path was money in the bank with it.   ;)

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
