Cold Weather Riding
« on: February 09, 2011, 02:34:03 PM »
What temps do you start riding in? I usually will wait until around 50 or somewhere close.  My only real problem is fingers.  I have a Harley Fairing on my Honda ;D and it helps a bunch, but the fingers still get very cold.

What do you wear for head gear and gloves. I do wear a leather jacket with liner. Do need to get some good chaps.

PS next week is suppose to be in the upper 40's to uppper 50's yes!!

I wait till about 55-60 then start getting ready to ride. I wear a full face helmet or face mask and leather jacket. Also I wear a nonvibration glove that keep my hands pretty warm. Engine heat keep my legs warm, depending on how I'm riding.
Spring weather is almost here :)

Short rides at 40

Longer rides at 50

All day at 60 plus.

High 30's if there is a promise of warming temps. Fleece beanie , fleece neck gator. Underarmor shirt long shirt, hoodie with leather jacket over that, Underarmor leggings, fleece lined jeans and chaps. Spandex liners under gaunlet gloves that cover the sleeves openings completely. Oklahoma is crazy start out in the 30's be 70 by 1:30pm.     Was -5 here a week ago today was 75 , only in Oklahoma. Our first rally /poker run is March 12th.

Low 30's , sometimes mid 20's heading to work in the morning if the roads are clear. I wear a full face (modular, flip up) helmet..I wear it all year long though.I wear Aerostitch darien pants on the bottom and a heated jacket liner under my textile jacket on top.I put the Heat Demons grip heaters on my harley and they treat my hands pretty well..
I never could figure why some wrap all that junk around their head when its cold out... just wear the FF helmet and the head stays warm.... and intact... :o

Last October. 38* and a hundred miles from home. There's a reason God invented leather.

Well since previous post. I have ridden into work(30 miles) 3 times. 33 degrees to 38 degrees each morning. I wear a leather coat with liner, short and long sleeve t-shirt, long john pants heavy jeans, chaps(cheapOs) waiting for my new ones. Boots are some excellent Field and Stream work boots from Dicks. Boots are absolutely the best in cold weather, above 60 your feet cook. I wear a hood and full face helmet. Gloves are extreme military, they do not have the gauntlets for the wrists(ordering new gloves)
I ride a Honda Shadow 750 Ace with a Harley bat-wing, it helps A LOT. Although I get funny looks for it. Still need to drop a tool bag on the front, have a mean breeze coming underneath.
I guess for now I will just suck it up and ride, spring has to be close, was almost 80 today woo hoo.

i have a snap on nylon sheet that covers the crash bar on my electra glide.it really works, lets the engine heat boil up around you behind the fairing.

I just put a highway bar on. I am going to see if I can use the Harley soft lowers or if i will have to find or make some for mine. That would definitely knock the cold down.

By highway bar, are you talking about the crash bar? Or highway pegs? or just what?

40 degrees on up I start riding. Have good long johns and good leathers. I made a promise to myself that on December 7th last year, the anniversary of my mothers death, anything short of a monsoon I would make the 150 mile trip to my Mother and Father's grave site on my bike. Clear day that morning but 27 degrees. Everything was good except my hands and had to stop several times and hold them to the crankcase to get the feeling back in them. I promptly bought a better pair of gloves when I got back.

I gave up leather long ago...

Guess I'm just old school/old fashioned. Leather and layering has always worked well for me. I personally, just can't warm up to those color coordinated Cordura jumpsuits, but for those that prefer 'em, more power to 'em! I don't trash folk for what they wear or what they ride. But for many, ridin' is more about what they get to wear and not where they're goin'. That's when I tend to give a little crap.............. ;D

I agree with you on that one, too many ride to "look cool"..and the milage on their bike attests to the same..most ride garage queens..

I used to wear the leathers, still got a pair of chaps around here somewhere ;D!  I've just found textiles to be more versitile and with better protection. I ride a bit (50k on my '07 FLTR) and in all weather conditions and if I don't have to change what I'm wearing in the middle of a long trip due to weather or something so much the better.
