Hi,
What is the yardage range for the short vs the standard post?   I currently shoot a 405 gr bullet at
1180 fps  from 100 to 200 yds.  I hope to hit out to 300 yds .

Is the wood screw mount adequate? or will I be better off in the long run to use the brass screw inserts?

Which eye cup  - target or hunting?

Any experience and guidance that you could offer will be appreciated.

Thanks

The top of wrist mounting wil be fine as long as the curve of the wood under matches the curve of the sight base (keep it from rocking side to side). A number of old original target guns, muzzleloaders and cartridge were thus mounted.
Remember, there is that buttstock bolt hole running in there so the wood isnt as thick as one might think. I heard of a fellow who thinned out the wrist to get it closer to the action metal and inlet a sight base; he hardly had any wood left to screw into.
As for eyepiece, it depends on the light of the day, the direction you are shooting, your eyes, etc. Use the eyepiece that lets you see the target crisp and clear, if it is fuzzy at all you are too small.
FWIW, most people try to use too small an aperture and their scores suffer for it (been there, done that).

Having owned a BC I know first hand that they have very adequate sights.I fail to se where a tang mounted sight could improve on what is already there.I know Matthew Quigley had a tang sight but what advantage is there is adding another peep sight?

I have a Wesson and Harrington BC with a set of 45-70 and 38-55 barrels.  I have an old Marble's Tang sight mounted on mine, so it's not a really tall one.  It's probably only about three inches tall at best.  I believe I get a total of 81 or 85 clicks vertically with it.

With 500 grain bullets and medium loads, I can reach just over 100 yards at full height.  With 300 grains, I can get out to about 150 or so, maybe more.
With the 38-55 barrel mounted, the sight at full height, and 264 grain bullets (284 grain, actual weight) I can get out to about 350 yards with the sight at full height.

I typically use the largest eye cup with the smallest aperature in the rear sight and a larger size circle in the front when target shooting.  If shooting "stuff" such as little critters etc, I use the larger eye cup aperature with a straight vertical front sight mounted.  With the target sights mounted in, it's hard to see a critter, hence why I change the set of sights for plinking/hunting.

I hope that helps.

The Williams FP sight is good for 600 meters with 500gr Lee 500R BP loads, 750 meters with smokeless loads in the 45-70 BC with a .404" 17A front sight, lots of info on sights in the FAQs, the links below are just a couple of the many links that are included in Peep and Firesights, and Long Range Sights for the BC and Target. There's also a link to John Boy's 1000yd 45-70 shooting with BP loads in the FAQs.

Stan, It comes down to what we each think looks AND works on the more 'traditional' looking BC and TM rifles. The Williams can look just too modern. Now, if they also had an open barrel mounted sight the fold down option of the tang sight would be even better (we dont use the std WGRS peep with the tang sight); use the open sighted in for close range and the tang for longer and/or target shooting.

That Skinner sight on the Handi looks like it was born there. Really looks like a part of the original design of the gun. One is now going to go on my BC 45 Colt. Thanks for posting that picture. Does the front sight have to be changed to use it?

I'm not sure about the .45 Colt.  I make the sight in two heights though.  One is. 380" approx. From top of barrel to center of aperture and the other is approx. 480".

Hope that helps!

Looks like you have a tang mounted sight on there too.  Am I seeing that correctly?
What kind of sight do you have back there?

When I bought the Buffalo Classic, a Tang, (read stock) sight had been mounted on the rifle with wood screws, (wasn't that OEM on some BC's?) and there were some holes and marks on the stock where the sight had been mounted.

I ran into a Italian (I believe) Tang sight from ? what rifle I dont know, and it fit right on the BC stock.  I have not shot the rifle with the Tang Sight in place but it lined up perfectly with the open sights on the rifle (which shot to point of aim at 50 yards)

Tang sights always seem to be in my way when shooting or carring a rifle.  I have several guns that wear tang sights but to my way of thinking, although they certainly serve a purpose (ie: long range) I'd rather have my aperture sight mounted on the receiver (or in the case of the BC/ HR on top of the barrel.)

:)  Folks are ordering the SKINNER H&R / Handi Rifle sights.

THANKS!

I have the shorter 45/70 Handi. I have done a little work that makes it look older. I used a Remington rear sight i bought on line for 12.50. I mounted it where the scope was supposed to go. It does shoot a little high unless I take out the elevator slide, then it is right on for buffalo silhouette at 100 to 200 yards.
aim small, hit big
