Thought I wanted a .357Mag, but
« on: December 10, 2010, 05:15:08 PM »
then I got to thinkin', my 38-55 with .379ish bullets is only .020 bigger dia.(and .010 on a side) than a .359 in .357Mag/Maxi, and my light bullet at 250ish gr. is just fine (300gr. for heavy). This caliber is a .38 MMM ('Maggie,Maxie, Monster').
Its kinda like the 45-120 is to the 45-70.
I dont really need to keep looking for a .357M at all, nope, not me...........
(Richard, you devil....I think you infected me today)

I think you got it figgured. Hopefully you can find some reduced loads and have the versitility of the 357. Blue dot works real good making reduced loads for me.

I understand what you are saying. but can you download it enough to be as quiet as .38 and recoil as little? just curious.

Usually we make up excuses to buy another rifle. I think you are falling off the wrong side of the Handi wagon :D

As a longggg time handloader and dedicated cast bullet shooter I make every custom load I want. I dont have a 160-200 gr. bullet to try but the 250 loaded down is cheap and fun. Mostly I make my 'light' rifle loads run between 1250 and 1450 fps.; seems to be a happy place for me.
If a .357Mag Handi ever shows up around here at a fair price I will grab it, Im just not going to be obsessed with getting one no matter what, nope, not me, uh uh........

I is tempted to question the manhood of a Handi Owner who doesn't own a 357 Max (357 Mag doesn't count), but I would never do that to someone I like in a public forum. ;D

Guys, jump on your snow sleds and come up here.....we've got more than enough snow to run on and bullets to shoot.  It gets lonly around here this time of year.  All the snowbirds are off for the balmy south.

Pete, appreciate the invite, but Im short on Husky's for the sled and once I got there I might be snowed in 'till breakup. My daddy always said,"guests, like fish, after 3 days begin to stink", so I'll spare you the nose holden'.
BTW, we've backpacked the Porcupine Mtns Wilderness up there years back when most used tents and small units in the two campgrounds, now most everyone has a big motorhome. The only way to really see the place (a true wilderness park) is to hoof it back in; it aint no drive through park.

Well, I went just the opposite, I had the 38-55, traded it for the 357 maxi... Thought about just chopping the 38-55 as Tim did and Pete has. but I just never been that dedicated to lead bullets, certainly never to the point where I was limited to their use on game. Mine didn't shoot the .375s good enough...

Good luck with it, I'll be watching to see how yours turns out!!

CW, Ive had 2, first one I left as the BC-TM but put on the nice upgrade Williams target peep from H&R, then had an offer I couldnt refuse after it had sat most of a year neglected (you know how it is). It took a couple of years but I got another one, though not the last model after they figured out the right throat. I have worked my way around it.
This 2nd one Ive put my cin-lam Ultra Varmint wood on and scoped with vintage El Paso Weaver glass. It is a long barreled beauty that is sweet to shoot. I do like carbines, but this, and the 45-70 (which I dont have) I like long.
Im still enough of a luddite that I havent got to pics-101.

We are 'wintered in' so I sat down with my 'Cartridges of the World' last night and started re-visiting some of the interesting ones. I think a .357 Mag Handi could be rechambered pretty nicely to '35-30-30'; reamers and dies are available, it is an olddie, and will be about everything a 35 Rem is.
Anybody got 'multiple .357s' to give this one a try? It would be a step up from the Max, still be rimmed, cheap brass, and the 30-30 extractor will work (or just recut the orig.)
Of course, somebody has already done this and I missed it..........

My lder brother has a 35-30-30 in a T/C Contender,I've rung the steel at 300 yards with it pretty easily. Would the twist rate for the 357 Mag/Max be compatible with the longer bullets of the 35-30-30? Might be an interesting conversion.

If I come across another 357 barrel I'm gonna make it a 35 Remington or a 358 Winchester. I'm leaning towards the Winchester.

.357 is more fun than it sounds.

That said, if you reload cast, there is nothing you can't do better with a 30-30. Plus factory 30-30 ammo is as cheap as factory .357.

Richard, save yourself a lot of stress....get the .357....ream it to max. and relax.  Right after that you can get a .44 Mag and ream it to .445.  Then the .45LC would be up for .454 or .460.......Merry Christmas.

Down here in Ga. it's a passel or a sack full. ;D

Ben

BTW Richard....you gotta' have a 357 max.  It's one of the funnest ones out there.  And...and you can shoot cheap with them little 38's, Bullseye, and cast.  About 3 measley pennies a shot.  That justifies the barrel IMO.

Ben, I love your "sadistic streak".  I have to admit to the same thing.  Give someone a Handi .357 to shoot with .38s and then a .45-70 loaded hot with .405s.  We'll probably meet in Hell for that one.  What did the Pres. call it "shock and awe".

Yeah, that's what he said.
I was thinking that a Pardner 12ga. with a 3" Mag slug load would be pretty sadistic.
