Guess I faired better than some here.  Mom was 5'2" and heck on wheels...when my loving brother and I would do something wrong (just short of burning the house down) we got it with what ever was handy...belt, what ever end she grabbed, we got the other.  Looking back I can say we got away with a lot more than we got caught.  Dad on the other hand used his hand IF he had to get involved.  That is up until I was 17 and during an argument with my older brother that woke the house up Dad grabbed me by the shoulder to turn me around and I took a swing....lets say I started....then I started to get up then I started to get up then I decided it was safer on the floor.  Looking back, I don't remember a bruise....Course when you are used to BB gun fights, bullwhip fights, throw butcher knives at each other, shooting at each other with bow and arrow, playing chicken with large knives.....what punishment I got from Mom and Dad was in no comparison to what we did to each other.  Dad kept me out of trouble a couple of times and stood up for me on a couple of more.  I always thought I was an angel.....Based on todays standards....I would be in Jail.....Heck I turned out OK....at least thats my opinion and I am sticking too it...Just have to get the wife to quit laughing.....My Kids...doing ok...grand kids....now there's my chance to get even...spoil spoil spoil....given them a candy bar, mountain dew and take em home to Mom and Dad......

Sure there are other translation than the KJV.  ;)
Raising children---and I am far from a good example of how to do it correctly--doesn't come with instructions.
Most learn from their parents---good/bad they imitate.
It is the attitude of disipline that affects/effects the outcome.
My mother could talk me into repentance---for awhile.
I would rather have had a whuppin than a talkin too.
I put my fist to my boy once--he was 16--and I regret it.
We laugh at it now--but I regret it.
He deserved it--but I regret it.
I am the worst example of raising children I know and i seem to do it better with my grandchildren----thank the Lord for second chances.

i learned after a couple of years to never whip a child ,,while i was mad..
let them sit an hour an wait..then  [for sure]  so they knew i could be depended on .. they got 3 measured
licks on thier fully clothed bottum..i found the setting an dreading the spanking to be the best way to just about eliminate the need for spanking much..it worked for me.. slim

Heather, I agree with you 100%. Kids have to be taught that there will be consequinces for their actions. Also I believe there should be rewards for good behavior.

Also I believe there should be rewards for good behavior.

I believe that children should behave because it is the right thing to do, and not because of what is in it for them.  Yes I do believe that good behavior should be acknowledged and even praised.  I use good behavior as a means to 'earn' back items taken away for negative behavior, but when you get into rewarding expected behavior I feel that you are bribing kids to act right and not teaching them to act right.  Doing the right thing isn't always fun, but it is always a reward in itself.

mechanic it sounds to me like you need to learn to mind your own business! What the hell gives you the right to butt into someone else's family? A fella can get hurt real bad doing that.

Just a question Beerbelly - if you were witness to an adult  hitting a three year old with his hands or fist, front hand or back hand so hard as described by Mechanic, you would do nothing, and not interfere with "someone elses family"?    I believe Mechanic made the distinction between "beating" and a "whipping' or "spanking".

I know where he is coming from because I too witnessed an out of control mother take off a 2" wide leather belt and start strapping her 3 yr old daughter across the face and mouth while in the checkout line at the grocery store.   the child was screaming horribly and there were red strap marks across her face.
I stepped up and tried to defuse the situation by turnnig the attention to me.......I asked her in a low tone of voice why was she beating the child like that?  I told her that people were watching and what she was doing would land her in jail and her child in Protective Custody.    She started hurling profanity at me, telling me to stay out of her business, that she could "spank" her child any time she wanted to.

At that I flagged down one of the local police officers in the shopping area to get into the store.   The officer arrrested the mom and the child was taken for a medical exam.  They found old bruises and injuries that were described as chronic physical abuse.      If I hadn't stepped in at that time maybe someone else would have but either way it was the right thing to do.

Well all I can say is I got my a$$ beat often and for the most part I deserved it... and when I didn't for the reason accused I always did for some other reason... GB and I have a long history of butting heads but once I grew up and seen things from the other side of it I understood why and now we have been business partners for over 12 years... And yes I bust my kids butts with both my hand and a belt...

As to what mechanic said... I can relate... back in 03 I was in walmart and right beside me a punk ass thug back handed his girlfriend for simply telling him that she didnt think what he was looking at would work... After the back hand to her he was met with a full on two handed shove from me which placed him flat on his back looking up at me... he started reaching into his pocket and then caught a "Hi-Tech" to the chin and was out cold until the cops showed up... My little trip to walmart took me over two hours but the girl left with the cop and the guy left with a huge gash in his neck from my boot.  He was also invited to a rematch at anytime he felt froggy but declined...  Beat on someone in front of me that cant defend themselves and you will also have to beat on me and that might just take more than most expect...

Well my kids are grown, and we are getting together at the green top BBQ joint sat. night to celebrate my 71st birthday. But had anyone jumped on me about my kids one of us would have got shot! Yes I tore their butt up when they needed it. I would have tolerated no one interfering in my family!
Matt,  I was in a bar once and a retarded couple that lived in some sort of half way house a few blocks away were there. A guy was have a great old time tormenting the girl. They were incapable of defending themselfs. Yeah, I beat the hell out of the bullie. But that is a totally different deal than messing in a mans family.

Beerbelly, I have been hurt badly a time or two but the day I stand by and watch someone hit a child in the face with their fist and do nothing I hope someone kills me.  It was that guy who went to jail, and the cop shook my hand.  You figure it out.

I HAD A SIMILAR SITUATION

he smacked  her she went down  hard
he kicked her
drew his hand  back to hit her  while she was still down
i grabbed his  hand...spun  him  towards me....took  his balance
pulled  him  into  me....then lifted and tossed him with  both elbows
i  am  short  so i got  under him  easy

she  came  up and  got in my face and  cussed  me out royally
i  hope he made  her a missing  person

I did not mean to to reward kids with material things. I think a "thank you" or "good job" is in order as a means of encouragement. Let them know that you appreciate their good behavior as much as you dislike their bad behavior.
