I shot them in 3 diferent handis and found them to be plenty accurate.  Recoil seemed to be about the same as using 300 HP's and 41 grains of Reloder 7, a medium load.  I decided not to use them for deer after I saw the damage they do!  I was scared of making a bad shot and blowing up a bunch of meat. ;D  Plus, I already had a bunch of Hornady 300 HP's loaded up when the LE's came out, so I just ended up sticking with those as I was happy with the bang-flops they produced.

When Hornady decides to make a big game killer, they don't play! I would say the majority of 45-70 shooters down here use the LE's. That certainly speaks to their effectiveness.

They shoot cloverleafs at 100 yards out of my 22" Handi. I shot one deer last year and it was bang, flop.
As for recoil my handloaded 300gr Rem hp over 50.0 of Reloader 7 seem to kick harder. If you want a real shoulder bruiser, load up some H4198 to the max level 2 loads.

Don't want to sidetrack this thread, but I gotta ask-What is your experience with those 300 Rem.HP's on game with that load. Did they leave an exit hole, ever recover any bullets, etc. Thanks

4570FAN,

You asked for experiences with the factory LE ammo, here you go.  I have used the .45-70 LE round on one pig, range 75~ yards shooting a 22" Handi with a Bushnell Trophy 4 reticle red dot set on the ring with dot.  When zeroing at 100 yards, I was dead on but when I shot that a pig in the 20-25 lbs range he didn't want to die.  He was quartering away and I aimed at his head below and behind his right ear.  At the shot he went down, rolled on his back and commenced to kicking.  As I reloaded, he jumped up and took off just a squeeling.  There was a dinner plate sized pool of blood on the ground.  Callled my brother and we went to tracking, we tracked that little guy all over a 102 acre lease, zig-zagging all over the place thru the trees and brush.  We followed a blood and meat chunk trail over close to 500 yards tracking him to a wheat field where he managed to cross an other 200 yard open field and get onto the neighbors place.  At that point we said "bump it" and let him go.  Haven't had another shot on game since then when armed with the .45-70.  I will continue to hunt with the LE ammo though.

Used the .30-30 LE round to shoot a doe this hunting season.  One shot in the right side rib cage, lungs turned to soup, exit out the left rib cage just behind the shoulder, she went down, jumped up went about 25 yd and down for the count.  Distance was ~125 yd.
