357 shooting 3' right
« on: December 17, 2009, 09:34:47 AM »
I was excited to get my hands on my 357 earlier this week.  Got out to shoot last night and it's shooting about a foot to the right at 50 yards!  One of the ring screws had stripped, so long shot that it was the rings.  Well picked up a new set of rings this AM and nope, still waaaaaaay right.
Took it back to the GS and he pulled the base off.  All threes holes pointing right, so back to H&R or whoever.

Anybody else have this trouble?
Got:
Handi VP 22/410, 410, 20, 17M2, .223, 357MAX, 50cal ML SS w/MU plug

I think it's happened a time or two, if it's shooting good, Burris Signature Zee rings with the optional inserts to correct it may work if medium rings are to your liking.  ;)

Not sure if the photo showed up or not, but if I understand the problem you may be able to correct it with a set of weaver rings that allow you to adjust the windage of the actual scope body.  I got a barrel with scope mounted on weaver rings a while back and it was off to the left so far that I couldn't adjust it back.  Had to reset the scope and bore sight by adjusting the ring mount.

Might work....

I did think about the Zee rings, but only if H&R would want to pay for them.

Didn't have much of a chance to check the MOA.  I was tempted to see if it was "a shooter" and just corret the zero, but on a NEW gun I shouldn't have THAT much "zero" to correct.

I just hope the new one I get back has the holes drilled straight .. .?

In the end, the purpose of buying this gun is to be a beginner deer rifle for my 9 and 10 year olds.  After I find "the magic load" I planned on putting a Muller QuickShot on it.   Then the crooked scope base would still be an issue. :(

357mag barrels are out of stock now, aren't scheduled for production until next year, Mar/Apr is the expected date at this time, but they may have some available that are reserved for repairs.... hopefully.

Just wondering if you tried to bore sight the rifle before taking it to the range? That would have given you an early clue.

I recently bought a .223 Handi and, amazingly, when I mounted the scope and put the bore sight on it, it was only off 3-4 clicks to the right and a couple clicks high. Still have to get it zeroed at the range, but what are the odds the scope and rifle would match up like that out of the box? Lucky.

I bought a .357 new style 2 weeks ago. Mine was drilled straight, so you may have gotten a friday or monday barrel. They couldnt wait to get out for the weekend, or hung over still ;)

I hope you get it resolved, these are a hoot to shoot.

My .17 HMR was off way to the right as well due to a screw up at the factory drilling the holes. I used Millett angle-loc windage adjustable rings $ 30.00 set . Aligned and lapped the rings which should be done anyway and the first shot was 1" left at 50 yards. But if you don't align the rings correctly with any of the windage adjustable style rings you will likely destroy the scope by bending the tube during installation.

Drill and tap three new holes 1/4" further foreward. Drill and tap the center hole first and tighten the screw. Mount the scope on the base and bore sight. Then mark the other two holes drill and tap and you are done. 1/2H job at the most.

I think I would rather spend a 1/2 hour at a gunsmith than be without my gun while it was sent back to H&R.  True, you would have to stand the cost yourself, but what's a few bucks when you can use the rifle right away.  44 Man

Thanks guys!
Yesterday I ordered the Burris Zee Signature rings with the off-set inserts yesterday.
When I got home last night I zeroed my scope with the mirror trick and then I went out and shot it at 100 yards with a bi-pod.
I got a 2" group with five shots with 158gr Federal American Eagle.

It was 22" right and 10" low.

Fred, Thanks for the easy fix.
If I get a reddot sight (boy's first deer rifle setup) this is the route I will go.

Did ya adjust the scope using the offset inserts to get it zeroed after shooting that group?
