I shot my first 44 mag today
« on: September 29, 2009, 01:51:59 PM »
My 10" 44 mag barrel came in today.  I bought it from ssdave.  I bought a 50 box of ammo today and went to my range.  This is the first time I have shot a pistol larger than my 9mm.  I took 10 bullets with me.  At 25 yrds the first 2 didn't hit the paper plate, they were low.  After some adjustments the next five I zeroed in.  The last 3 I put on another paper plate.  After I shot the last 3 I covered the bulls eye with a quarter and it touched all 3 holes.  I was pumped.  I shot standing using my normal IDPA stance.  Do ya'll use the same grip with a G2 as you do with an automatic.  I shoot left handed and find my right index finger is pressed against the trigger guard.  Am I trying to hold it to high on the grip?  I'm already wanting to reload.  I'm saving my money for the Tulsa gun show in November.

God Bless you  :)
I am glad you like that new barrel
All I get out of them is Blood
On both sides
I killed a pig
sold the barrel
Cut me a few times learning how to hold it
But the Recoil was just too stout for me
enjoy

Once you learn to reload, you can make some very comfortable but deadly rounds.  The 240 Grn cast bullet with max load of Trail Boss runs right at 1000Fps out of my 10 inch TC w/mild recoil and no leading.  I hold my supporting hand under my shooting hand to avoid blood on my end evan with heavy recoiling loads. Hope this helps, and welcome! 8)

Tommyt that was funny.  At $1.00 a shot I will have to reload and I plan to.  Assuming you have your own brass what does it cost to reload per 100 pcs. of the 44 mag rawhidekid?  How many times can you reload a 44 mag case?  It sure was fun shooting that thing.

They say that with the TC you do not need to crimp.  Without crimping you may never need to buy more brass.  The expantion then recrimping is what eventially cracks the brass.  I get about 50 rounds for $5.00 as long as I don't charge myself for time spent! 8)

The only bullets I found around here in 44mag was $50 for 50 rounds.  That takes the fun out of shooting.  Reloading is the only way to shoot.

When shooting a Contender or Encore pistol, I point my left index finger at the target (I'm right-handed).  That keeps the trigger guard from eating my finger.  If your left handed, keep the right index finger from behind the trigger guard.

That's the only bane with the Contenders is the trigger guard digging into the index finger on the non-shooting hand.

Reloading will save TONS of money.

What is a LBT mould.  I assume it is a brand or style of cast lead mould.  That sounds like fun too.  Are there some good books on casting bullets?

Im new here and new to shooting a Contender but Im not new to shooting high powered revolvers or autos.
Ive read many posts about blood wounds, especially from the left hand from folks free hand shooting.
I dont under stand why?
The Contender grip/trigger design dosent allow a clean two handed grip, so why grip it like you would a revolver?
Most contenders are long barrel, sometimes mounted with a scope, this makes a front end heavy chunk of metal your trying to support with two hands together.  Makes no sense to me.
Your contender has a fore grip, use it. left hand on the fore grip, right hand on the trigger.
Feet 45 to 30 degree to your target.Left hand, push forward, right hand pull back. This makes a rock solid sight view, now squeeze trigger.
Maybe Im all wrong,, but works for me?

I don't understand why either but I've had my share; never from free hand shooting though.

MB, I shoot my Contender just like I do any other pistol or revolver, good two handed hold, supported if at all possible. My strong hand grips normally and my support hand has little and ring finger on the grip but the next two fingers are on the trigger guard.

The .44 mag definitely lends itself well to handloading. I download for my .41 and .44 mags to get a load that is stout enough to knock a deer in the dirt but still be fun to shoot.

I tried my Contender 10 inch .44 mag barrel today  shot about 15 rounds, with Cast Perf,  275 gr bullet, 21.5 gr. H110, it's worse than the 14 in. barrel. It hurts my hand, and really jumps up,  I sure like the Contender, but it's a little much. ( Could it be my age ?  78} lol

Reloading will save TONS of money.

That's not necessarily true.

I spend the same amount of money (all that I can afford) - just shoot a whole lot more for the same $$ by reloading  ;D

I am just getting into reloading. But couldn't you down load the .44 a little, and a smaller weight bullet?

As stated earlier the 240 cast bullet over max load of Trail Boss in a 10 inch TC; accurate & mild shooting. 8)

45-70, what type of lead do you use to make your cast bullets?

45-70, what type of lead do you use to make your cast bullets?

i  have   about  a half tom  of pure lead.......free

i  add  50%   wheel weights when  i can get them....[hopeing  that hardens it enough]

no  leading  so  far  but i don't push them too  hard  with  this   or  180 grain 357

heavy bullets  are quieter and slower...[slower means less leading]

i  cast up some  pure lead  just to see if they lead  but not  loaded  or shot any yet

they  are even  heavyer.....probly just reserve them for the  speacials  and  conserve wheel weights

I remember the first time I owned TCs,  I tried that two fingers over the trigger guard on a 10 inch 30-30 barrel. I fired the round and ejected it over my shoulder just missing my head. :o  Left hand on forend or under grip for me. 8)
