Just back from putting Insulation up in my cabin, trying to get ready for general season to open up.  I HATE INSULATING!  Anyway, last night north of my place is a bunch of deer and a really LARGE one.  Grabbed the binocs and counted 39 head of mulies and the big boy was a spike elk.  Looked out the east window and for as far as I could see with the binocs, I counted 41 more deer.  Running accross the middle of my place was 2 groups of 3 and 5.  Then this morning I had a doe and her yearling go 30 ft from my porch, more deer crossing in back and more coming up from the east to cross about 130 yards behind me.  And more deer north, didn't count them.  We have had cold and snow this week and I think that has them out eatin' all they can before winter hits.  Should be a good year for hunting.  DP

Since I have to work a 24hr shift today, my wife decided to go sit on my stand this afternoon. About 7:15pm, she calls to inform me she got a big doe with her 44 Mag. I bought the barrel out of the classifieds here & fitted it to a receiver I had. From what she said I figured it was about a 40-50 yd shot. She put LE bullet right behind the right shoulder, she said it tried to run & dropped.

Each year Jessica & I put all our spare change in a large jar (we also sweeten the pot with a few $ thru the year) & whoever kill the 1st deer of the season get's $$. There was a $112.37 that I could have found a use for, but I've won the past 4 yrs, so it's her turn this year.

I wish everyone a productive & safe season this year.

Paul

I'm going to use my shortened 44 mag Handi as my backup hog gun while bow hunting for deer this weekend. I'm saddled with 5 deer tags now at my lease. I'll have to shoot em with something.

Since I only have 1 Handi the choice is easy - 45 Colt!

Love those new stocks. I like the longer forearm piece. I have a Survivor that i put a monta carlo butt stock on to get the same effect. You should be able to see it in this picture.

Just got back from the ranch I hunt and we checked on the blinds and I put up a ladder stand, and decided to take my .270 Handi and set up a target and try out some Federal 130 grain Power Shoks I've had for a while, and they shoot really well.

Set up my target at 100 yards, shooting off the tailgate of the pickup truck, and my first shot hit about 1" low but dead center, so I adjusted  the scope dial up to hit 2" high and the next shot nailed it.

I fired one more and hit 3/4" just to the right of that last shot but 2" high in line with it, like I wanted it to.

I took two deer last year with this barrel that I put together from the classifieds, and one buck I took was right at 100 yards, and the second was taken at approx 150 yards.

I feel confident, and I have some shots that are possible at  300 yards and I'm confident my Handi will handle whatever shows up this year.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
