The Handi with it's normal 22 inch barrel is a bunch shorter than most bolt actions from the start.  When I found the 357 and the 44 mag share the same bull barrel profile I found one in 44 magnum for just what you want. I cut the barrel to 17.5 inches and mounted a 3x9 Bushnell Banner on it. I also put a monte carlo stock on it.  It is handy and accurate with more thump than the 357. It also is a very mild kicker.  If I were to go 30-30 I would leave the barrel at 22 inches if it shot well and didn't need the muzzle cleaned up at the crown.
