.357 Survival- Add .308?
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:56:10 PM »
I have a .357 Survival Rifle and am considering adding a .308 barrel. I have heard that these rifles are not very accurate. What advice can you all give me? Thanks in advance.

What isn't accurate?  357, 308 or the survival part?  For the most part, I think you will find 357's and 308's are very accurate.  Any problems after you get it, just read the FAQ's and ask questions here.  DP

I was always told the Handi-Rifles are not as accurate as bolt guns in general. After reading this forum I am finding that to be BS.

Welcome! I guess it's a matter of degree of accuracy, Handis are basic work guns, tools if you will, they can shoot plenty good for most shooters, not likely benchrest accuracy, although with the right setup and "tinkering", they can be very accurate, but they'll do what they're intended to do, put meat in your freezer.  H&R's standard of accuracy is 2" or less, 3-shot 100yd groups with factory ammo. If it won't do that out of the box after you learn how to shoot it as shown in the Handi Basics 101 sticky, they'll fix it so it will.  ;) There are also a bunch of things you can do without the need of a gunsmith if you're the DIY type, those can be found in the FAQs and Help sticky which is mandatory reading for newbies.  ;D

Think just a minute about what you bought and what you bought it for.  The name is survival rifle.  Bench rest, long distance, high capacity, military, show piece, safe queen, new in box, and mint condition may or may not help you survive where you need a firearm.  Survival is a tough dirty world and things get beat up, bad.  Most shooting is going to be under 100 yds. and in lousy conditions.  First consideration the minimum number of moving parts.  Will it work EVERY time you need it?  Second, does the ammo have a wide enough spread to cover 90+% of anything you can imagine.  You can really only shoot one kind of ammo at a time.  Third, weight.  If you can't pack it with you all the time everywhere, it won't be there when you need it.  Fourth, can "YOU" shoot it almost instinctivly.   If you can't master the weapon/ammo combination using basic muscle memory you aint gonna make it.  Don't think about what you can or cannot hit or accomplish at any range or condition, practice until it is automatic and thinking is necessary only for that last split second only before you squeeze the last 1/4 inch.

Nothing else will let you surrvive,  This I can swear to by the Ranger Badge tatooed on my backside.

Most can be tuned to shoot MOA.  That is the accepted standard for an accurate hunting rifle.
For me, the rifle I keep in my truck is a .223.  I have a 12ga. bbl that I can fit to it.  That will take care of any thing i'll ever run across on my trip to work and back.
