No, now I know of 2 irresponsibe farmers, the one that used the 45/70 inside a barn with other people, live stock and equipment in there and the one that put his wife and child in danger from a large animal and a possible stray bullet. I told this story to several of my friends who also farm and all agreed that you would never have gotten the gun in their barn and if you had, the only part you would have seen is the butt end on the side of your head! There was no need for anything larger than a 22lr or a 22mag, if someone that was competent with a gun was present.
I am glad it all worked out and no one was hurt, but it shows poor judgement on all adult parties in the barn at the time, all the way around.

You were not there, so just let it go.  No person, animal, equipment, etc. was in danger.  The job got done.  Period.

Qaz,
Your certainly intitled to your opinions as we all are. But I feel your tact here is a getting a bit bit offensive and bordering on a personal attack..
Pete is a long time poster, he is proven to be smart, safe and trustworthy member here. This is based on his numerious posts, offering a helping hand or piece of advice to others, his trade with others and numerious lifes experience stories. I am quite certain if that situation was at all unsafe. Pete would not have shot that animal. You, I nor any of us sans Pete himself was there, so we can not factually comment on the safety or lack there of in that situation.

Suffice it to say that you do not think it safe and you would not have done it.

I'm just going to say what everybody is thinking Qaz... (censored).  If you were to say you were taking a .22 mag on a deer hunt you would be hung out to dry.  To use a .22 lr or mag on a 150 lbs deer is illegal in most states.  To use a rifle w/ less than 1000 ft lbs of energy to hunt a 150 lbs deer is debatable.  To take choose a .22lr to take with you to face a ramaging hog (that wieghs in at 1000 lbs mind you... did Pete mention rampaging?) is just retarded.  Had I been called in pete's situation, I would have grabbed my wife's 30/30.  I would have also felt undergunned although I have put down several donkeys, horses, mules, and cows with it.

Pete made the right call, and i'm sure his nieghbor is a lot more worried about the other damage that hog caused then the 3/4-1" hole his gun put in the barn door.  Pete's judgement and opinion is highly respected on this forum, not to mention he constantly goes out of his way to help others.  He is a great person and his judgement and character will be defended on here.

some men are much like dogs they bark and fuss or shoot hogs with a 22 short ( we did so for years ) as long as the fence is up and good . When the fence comes down or you step in the barn it might be best to shut up and carry more gun ! IMHO !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks Shootall, that's about what I did.  Some people posting here don't really understand what a free running, pissed off 1000 lb. hog is all about.  I didn't either until I saw him.  I'm real thankful that Handi .45-70 was in my hand.  When Kathy, my neighbor called, she said he was 800 to 1000 pounds and totally out of control.  Would anyone have taken less than their largest caliber. Dah ??? ???  Yeah, sure, I'd take my .22 and go plink him.

Pete was right here.  I have and would again butcher a 800-1000lb hog with a 17HMR (using the proper bullet), or a bull, etc.  For butchering, it is a good round for the job. However, if I was called to help with a rampaging animal, be it hog, horse, bull, whatever, I would not take the 22 or 17, I would have carried my 450 Marlin.  I know it will do the job, even if I can't get the exact shot I want.  In Pete's position, I would have had the 45/70 with me too (only reason I would grab my 450 over the 45/70, my 45/70 has a very long barrel, my 450 is a guide gun, with a very short barrel).

Furthermore, I also would have had my .44Mag on my belt, this would provide me with a few more options on a out of control animal.

This farmer was more than likely worried about his family and their safety, a 1000lb hog is not a trivial animal to have out of control.  I am sure he was more than happy to see enough gun to do the job show up in his barn.

I have no issue discussing with Pete all day the merits of a 17HMR or one of the 22s for butchering livestock, and we have in this thread, however, I can not fault him in any way for his response to this hog.

Fortunately I don't have to use this very often, don't make me use it here. Sam, I suggest you read the rules on personal attacks.  :-\

Thanks Carl.  The key to the whole thing in my mind was "1000 lbs and out of control".  That's why I grabbed the .45-70.  It was loaded and carried another nine rounds on the stock.  I killed a deer in my youth with a .22LR, and I'm not proud of it.   I've also, when young, made some amazing killing shots with small calibers.  None of which I would try again.  I guess I've grown up some.

I don't think the topic closed button is working...  :-\

Wonder if it is connected to the missing spell check?

I don't think Tim was closing the thread.  I think he was saying he could.

To all, we're whipping a dead horse.  Lets put the subject to rest.
