Pete was right here. I have and would again butcher a 800-1000lb hog with a 17HMR (using the proper bullet), or a bull, etc. For butchering, it is a good round for the job. However, if I was called to help with a rampaging animal, be it hog, horse, bull, whatever, I would not take the 22 or 17, I would have carried my 450 Marlin. I know it will do the job, even if I can't get the exact shot I want. In Pete's position, I would have had the 45/70 with me too (only reason I would grab my 450 over the 45/70, my 45/70 has a very long barrel, my 450 is a guide gun, with a very short barrel).
Furthermore, I also would have had my .44Mag on my belt, this would provide me with a few more options on a out of control animal.
This farmer was more than likely worried about his family and their safety, a 1000lb hog is not a trivial animal to have out of control. I am sure he was more than happy to see enough gun to do the job show up in his barn.
I have no issue discussing with Pete all day the merits of a 17HMR or one of the 22s for butchering livestock, and we have in this thread, however, I can not fault him in any way for his response to this hog.
