Twist rate ultra varmit 223? and accuracy
« on: December 25, 2008, 05:01:24 AM »
I am thinking of getting a 223 varmint rifle and what kind of accuracy do people get from this rifle and what is the twist rate? I shoot paper and load my own so twist rate is important to me. The other target rifles I was looking at run at least 500$ more then the  H&R. I love my buffalo classic so maybe I will try the varmint.

223 1 in 12", late models are a mix of 1:9"/1:12",  2007 Marlin produced barrels are 1:9", use instructions below to determine the twist rate.

If you thumb thru the FAQ sticky, There is a load of information and tuning tips.

As far as accuracy I have not shot mine(just got it) much yet. Others will weigh in shortly. Good luck.

So do all the new ones have 1in9 or 1in 12. Thanks for the picture of the target. When it comes to accuracy poeple always say "It will shoot one hole all day" and things like that a picture is worth a thousand words. The resone I would like a 1in 9 is I want to shoot heavyer bullits 69 grn and up at ranges 200 yards plus. Thanks for the replies

All of the newer .223 should be 1-9 twist.

"New" is relative, current production 223s since sometime in early 2007 have been 1:9" except for the Superlight, anything older could have either. Just because a frame was made in 2007 doesn't mean the barrel was, they make barrels in runs of up to 500, the ONLY way to know what the twist of a barrel is for sure is to check it with a rod. :-\ And even then, there's no guarantee the 1:9" will shoot the longer, heavier bullets, there have been lots of 1:9" barrels that wouldn't shoot anything heavier than the 1:12" barrels would, shoot it with the load of your choice and hope for the best. ;)

The 223 "Ultra" bull barral I got after sending it in June 18th 2008 (and got back Nov 18, 2008) was a 1:12" twist ejector barrel.  Even though they supposedly quit making them since 2007, some still show up out of the factory - as recently as last month.

Of course, they could have just been trying to get rid of the last of their junk - mine came with an ejector that won't engage the case rim - looks like it was made for a larger dia case.

My Ultra fluted 24" 1-9" 223 shot the 69gr Sierra's very well til I turned it into a 225winchester.The SS super lite 1-12" shoots 45gr Rem SP and Ultra max 55gr remanufactured factory ammo right at 1" so I have not even worked with a handload yet as I have many rounds of the factory stuff to shoot up first but I see no reason it won't one hole at some point in time.
