I don't know if I would hone one. The trigger is a mild steel with a thin case hardening. A few strokes will help if one has knowledge. The usual procedure is to adjust the travel screw and to replace the heavy trigger wire with a lighter music wire. The safety screw may need adjustment too, but is not likely.

You can Google "Savage trigger job" and get a few hits. There is a lot of info on the Savage Shooters website.

or if you don't have trigger experience replace it with a SSS trigger. I have six Savage/Stevens rifles and all have SSS triggers; even the ones that came with Accutrigger. You'll never be sorry!
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

I honed mine. It can be done, but you have to be careful about it. You don't want to change any angles, just knock the corners down. The Stevens trigger is pretty rough, mine had horrible creep and was around 6 pounds of pull. I didn't change the spring, but backed off the tension screw a little and honed the surfaces. Now it's still around 4 pounds, but the creep is gone. I can shoot it now. Some day I'll probably put the SSS trigger in it, but it's a coyote calling rifle, so the ranges are fairly short, and 4 pounds is shootable.

If you do your own, make sure you "test" the trigger thoroughly before using it. I repeatedly slammed my bolt closed and hit the sides of the rifle while making tension adjustments on the screw. My first adjustment was too much and caused the trigger to fire if you slammed the bolt closed. Slamming the butt against the ground only results in setting the safety to "Safe".

For the $85 or $90. bucks for the SSS adjustable ,its just not worth playing with the stevens factory triggers.Installation and adjustment is simple. It Had to be for a dummy like me to do it ;D

I've taken the stones to a two screw Savage trigger, same as the Stevens, and you can get a decent hunting trigger with some work.  The three screw triggers are easier to get a good feel/pull from and can be had cheap($20).  The SSS trigger is in an entirely different category.  For the work involved and the outcome I would buy a three screw rather than work another two screw trigger over.  Swapping return springs is a big help also.

+1. This will change the Stevens trigger into the "nice" catagory for hardly any cost.
