SB2 .44 SHORTENED?
« on: November 20, 2008, 11:35:49 PM »
Is there any advantage to shortening a SB2 .44? I don't reload, so I am using factory .44 ammunition. I am assuming the powder would burn off quick. So would the full length barrel actually be hurting the velocity and energy down range? I use mine primarily for hunting.

Thanks
Lonny

Not so, the longer barrel will allow for a more complete burn and higher velocity and energy numbers!!  But, on the other hand, if you wanted to make it "handi--er"  ::) You certainly could chop it down to just over 16".

 Good luck,

In a 44 mag you would not loose as much velocity as some other calibers, but you will loose a little and get more muzzle flash and noise. I have a 44 Mag, but did not cut mine down. Good shooting and Good Luck

It may be possible to build a barrel so long that the bullet will actually begin slowing before it reaches the muzzle, but for full power loads in a .44 mag it would have to be very long indeed.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Thanks guys. I was just thinking it would make it a little handier. But I would only do it if there was a benefit. One of the areas I hunt is pretty thick, would be a little help to cut it. But as long as the longer barrel has no real effect on the handgun chambering I will leave it as is. Thanks

The 44 mag can bark pretty loud when the barrel is short, but if ya feel the need it won't lose to much speed with 3-4 inches cut off.  DP

What about cut down to 18" and synthetic stocks??
Would make for a nice light carry gun.
