Couple of questions about recoil pads
« on: May 10, 2008, 09:16:49 AM »
Does anyone know what size pre-fit limbsaver fits the laminated thumbhole stocks?  Does the 45-70 with medium loads need a mercury recoil suppressor or will a good recoil pad be enough?

Thanks,
Bobby

I find the stock recoil pad more than adequate on factory loads....I have the handi with a 22" barrel and I find the recoil to be hard push so it doesn't hurt too much...

I agree with Stumpjmpr.  I jut got done shooting mine and my 06, .22-250 and .357.  My only problem was I shot the small bores first, and on the first shot with the 06, I got whacked because I was holding loose as if it were a .22.  I smartened up "right quick like" and had no problem with the 06 after that or the .45-70.  I'm a skinny little wop, and the .45-70 doesn't bother me a bit with the factory recoil pad.  Don't be afraid of her, just hug her in tight, let her know you love her, and let her rip.  She won't hurt ya, she loves ya too!
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Bobby,

One of my Boyd's t-hole stocks came with a Decelarator pad, the other on the 243 Ultra has just a thin Marlin pad, if yours has a standard H&R pad, you'll appreciate something better if you mean levergun level(300gr at 2100-2400fps) by "medium loads",  the factory pad is fine for trapdoor factory loads(300gr @ 1800fps), but levergun loads are considerbly more stout and a good pad like the Limbsaver is a very wise choice.

The best way to find out which one to use is trace the bare stock  and compare it to the dimensions listed on the Limbsaver site, then print a template (following their printing instructions)that matches and see how close it is to your stock, you'll likely have to drill at least one new hole and possibly both and be lucky if you don't have to plug a hole first if it's close. The other alternative is to just use the small grind to fit if you have a belt sander.

For bench and field work, an MRS is great, but just a lead filled pipe or shot in the stock bolt hole works great for just the bench work and can be removed for hunting.

If you want a nicer looking pad that's almost as good, the Pachmayr Decelarator is a very good choice, I recently installed a grind to fit on a cinn lam stock and am real happy with it. ;)

For shooting heavy recoil rifles off the bench I put a sandbag on end between my shoulder and the rifle butt.  Use a fairly long bag and you end up protecting yourself and supporting the rifle butt as well.

Even with a good recoil pad some of the big boys are tough to run thru fifty rounds or so.  I'm just flat not as tough as I used to be.  Or maybe I'm finally getting a little smarter.

Thanks to all that replied.  Quick, mine has the thin pad and I guess I'm referring to lever loads.  It will be my first 45-70.  May just shoot her first, and see if I come out black and blue.

Thanks,

FWIW, I prefer to use the type of pad that I wear on my shoulder.  This way, I only have to buy ONE pad that can be used on many rifles.  In addition to being a cheaper alternative, I can leave my rifles (some of which are collectable) in their orginal condition to preserve value.  Also, if I'm hunting or otherwise just shooting a few shells, I don't really need extra padding.  High round-counts at the range make it easy to just bring the pad along.  While the use of recoil pads is a personal decision, these are some of the things I considered in choosing mine.
Politicians and diapers both require frequent changing for the EXACT same reason…

I picked up a couple of Limbsaver slip ons to try on the 444 and the 45-70.  Haven't put them on yet but have used them on a couple of other rifles and think I like them better than Decelerators.  Seem to be a little softer, mostly for just playing.  When hunting, don't bother with them.  DP.
