Ok, I have a 22 mag Sportster that I am very happy with. It's very accurate with Winchester 40 grain super X ammo and many groundhogs, crows and a fair number of raccoons can attest to that. I do like this rifle as it's lightweight, easy to carry, and can take the bumps that my night fox\coon hunts dish out.
So, I was looking at the H&R web site at the barrel accessory program, then I read some post here (yeah...Tim posted 'em....and he is the H&R Guru). But I'm gonna do some math here....and maybe I'm missin something here....so please chime in and tell me where I have missed something. (Yeah Tim....I'm talkin to you)
Ok. I checked "Bud's Gun Shop" which is a pretty good place to check gun prices. A delivered 22 LR cost $144. (Prolly that at my local gun dealer). Then I need a scope mount....about $12....so the total will come to about $156. Now, if I go the barrel program route, the 22LR cost $59...H&R S&H and install is $25, and I figure $15 for me to ship my receiver to H&R. Now, H&R will give me the scope mount for FREE with the barrel program. So, the total cost is $99.
The cost difference is $57 to go with the barrel program. Yeah...it's not gonna break the bank or anything....but that's a 36% cost savings over a new gun.
Ok.....I;m duckin.....fire when ready!
