FPS from the 45/70 BC ??
« on: February 05, 2008, 05:27:39 AM »
 Ok Boys,

Got a question for you 45/70 BC owners ..

Any of you reloaders chrono'd the Feet Per Second gain from the longer barreled BC over a stock length 22" barrel ?

Come on Tim !! I know You Know !!  heh

Anyhow I was curious and couldn't locate the data myself..

   Thanks in advance,

I did a comparison with a couple 350gr bullets on this range report..

One other that I did was with Mac's 300gr Nosler partition load, it does 2425fps in a 22" barrel, 2450fps in the 32" barrel, so H4198 isn't a good powder to use to take advantage of the extra 10" of barrel.

Tim         Your the Man ,

Some how i just knew ;) You knew...

So then a slower burning powder would be the most beneficial for that long BC tube Tim ?

Keep in mind I'm still learning in the art of reloading ,so I may have some question for you from time to time :D

Yes, you need a slower powder to get the most out of it.   A faster burning powder may get you fast speeds in a short tube, but your slug may loose speed by the time it exits if pressures drop too far off.

I'm pushing 250-265gr slugs close to 2800fps and 300gr slugs to about 2500fps with a 32" BC barrel.   Pressures are in the upper levergun area.   I dont shoot anything heavier than some experimental 325gr slugs, the vast majority are 300gr'rs or 300gr'rs drilled out to 250 +/- grs.

...slow/medium burning powder, lots of of it.

With H335 and 405 grain Remington JSPs I get 1930 fps in my 22" Marlin 1895 and 2075 fps in my W&H 1871 Buffalo Classic.  Not fun to shoot in the BC.  I now shoot 488 grain Schmittzers at 1200 fps.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

Much thanks guys,

You all are a great library of Gun knowledge ;)

Kinda surprised at how fast those 250 grainers are pushing outta that BC for you knight..

And yeah Esox I wouldn't imagine 405 gr monsters being any fun are hot speeds , especially with no recoil pad the way the BC is set up..

Think this intel makes me more excited about getting one  ;D

  Thanks and regards ,

I don't shoot either of my BCs without the Galco, between it and a 16oz MRS, it's not so bad.  ;)
