Pictures Of My Handi Stock!!
« on: January 05, 2008, 08:16:31 PM »
Here it is, three coats of tru oil.

Also added a bipod, and a limbsaver barrel vibration gadget.   Range report on limbsaver coming soon.
Sorry for the pics, all I have is a $50 camera from 1998 but it works...

3 coats?
No offense, but I believe it takes a lot more than that.
If you want to call it done after 3 coats, so be it, but
don't be afraid to lay down a lot more coats of Tru
Oil. Mine didn't even start coming around till about
7 or 8 coats. I used stripper to get the factory finish
off at first then I like to use 400 grit wet or dry to get the
wood ready for the stain. Then the Tru Oil. In between
coats I smoothed the finish out before the next coat
with 400 wet or dry. I wipe the wood down with a
dust cloth after sanding every coat. It took patience,
elbow grease, and a lot of time. (Appx 3 weeks)
You can't get in a hurry. The good news is you can
always add more coats later. The more coats you lay
down the more the grain comes out and the better
the wood looks IMHO.

This is what it looks like with 12-15 coats.

Well the reason it only has 3 coats is that I took it shooting the other day, and I only have one rifle right now. So it's not done yet....

It's sealed up and I will add more coats soon, it's not where I'd like it quite yet, but I do want a lighter look to the wood though. Maybe 3 more coats or so should get it where I want it.  I was going to paint the whole gun in desert camo, but the stock right now is almost the shade I want it, and should blend in with the prairie well and break the outline of the stock up, and I think it looks nice too ::)   I actually stripped the old finish off by sanding alone, as I wanted to get to the nice grain, and slim the stock down a little.  I also re-shaped the pistol grip if you can see it in the pics (sorry the pics don't do it justice) with a rasp and hand tools. So far I have about 2 weeks into just prepping the stock, so it's not a rush job.

I don't think there is a minimum coat on tru oil, as long as it seals the wood up...

I do like your rifle though, the stock shows your hard work for sure.  You got a real nice cut of wood too...

Thanks

Rick

Rich

I like the little extra that you removed from the pistol grip area , should give tou a better grip . It still shocks me at the wood that H&R covers up with their spray on gunk .  :o

Stimpylu, thanks!  The stock never felt right to me, it felt too fat in the pistol grip, and it made it hard for me to shoot, my groups tightened up  a lot now that I can old the gun with comfort.

I also shaved a lot of wood off the bottom of the fore grip, it's pretty much a varmint style fore end now...
