Savage 7mm Rem Mag
« on: October 05, 2007, 07:35:11 AM »
Nothing obviously bad about this combination, is there.  Im about to decide on one of the Cabelas Laminated Exclusives.  Either get a 30-06 and sell my current savage 30-06, or get a 7mm mag as an addition.  I currently dont have any 7mm barrels so it is a caliber I am in NEED of.

My concerns going in would be a hunter weight barrel and heating on the bench with all of that powder affecting accuracy.  Savage says this is a pillar bedded stock and has the accutrigger, both are improvements from my current 110 model, well the stock is a big improvement over the colored oar I have now.

Hi There,

Sorry I cannot comment on the rifles however to my mind it's never a bad idea to get another rifle which is why I have so many rifles :LOL

for a hotrod like a 7 mm rem' mag' i'd get a hammer-forged or cut-rifled barrel.    i wouldn't buy a button-rifled barrel in a .220 Swift, .243, .270, 7mm mag', and some others.   i'd buy one in a .223 or a .308 if i had any choice at all.    i'd just expect to get a lot more milage out of the barrel that way.

in any event, i hope you enjoy the purchase.

BB:

I have a 30-06 Savage 110 and decided to keep it when I got my 7 mm Mag Model 110. I think the 7 mm mag and 30-06 are more alike than not for most practical purposes but I like both calibers and as noted earlier, 'tis better to have more than to have fewer rifles. If the shekels are not too much on the tight side, get the new 7 mm mag rifle and keep the old 30-06. If needed, the older rifle can be sold or bartered off in the future and can be used as a backup or loaner in the meantime.

I have to agree with Mountainview on this one.

If at all possible, keep the '06 and buy the 7mm when you can afford it.

Unless you hunt someplace where a 400 yard shot is the norm.  There is no advantage to the 7mm over the '06!

The 7mm shouldn't weigh all that much more than the '06 since the actions are not that much different.

The 7mm WILL NOT HOLD AS MANY ROUNDS AS THE '06 WILL!  Which is something to keep in mind if you hunt someplace where quick follow up shots are the norm.

I had a Savage Model 116 Weather Warrior Stainless Steel 7 MM  for one year.

I shot two deer with it and then gave it away.  Truthfully

The first deer was a sweet old doe that was running up a hillside 200 yards away and I shot her and she died not 6 feet from where I hit her.

The second shot was inside a tree-stand, I was not wearing hearing protection and the buck was 200 yards downhill and I opened the window and shot - because it was raining outside and I didn't want to get wet.  The percussion reverberated off the roof and windows and blew out one of my ear drums.  I spent over $1000 in audiologists and the emergency room and physicians to get some of my hearing back.  I still have permanent hearing loss and constant ringing in my ears since that one rifle shot - 7 years ago.

It had a magnaported barrel, the person that I traded it to - also complained about the noise level and wanted rid of it in one year of shooting and hunting.

Your poor old '06 boat paddle will still be around long after the 7mm is just a faint memory.

Well my mind was made up for the most part before starting this thread.  Cause, 5 hours later, I bought the 7mm Rem Mag  ;D and still have the odd 6.  My wife bought me that gun and every time I mentioned selling/trading it, she gave me a slight indication of disappointment.  But, if I offered to give her the money from the sale, you know that gun would be a distant memory for her.  :o

I did not mention, I am left handed, and this is the source of much of my loyalty to Savage.  I think I need to make a life long decision to never get rid of a left handed bolt gun - period.  Its easy to find a left handed gun, its hard to find just the right gun you are looking for at the time in left handed.  This gun did that for me, it has a nice left handed stock, chambering I sort of wanted and did not have, very good trigger, and soft enough on the wallet to allow me to buy a gun I don't need.  Who knows, maybe, some day I might load it down to about 90% and hunt with it since I am in 100yd and less country.  I cant do that with my 270wsm since its a right handed gun and weighs about 10.5 lbs.

I will try and get a picture of this in a tread in the savage forum because there are no pictures of the gun on the savage website, heck, I needed to talk to 2 customer service reps just to find someone that knows they make it.
