A lot of xenophobes will tell you otherwise but 7.62x39 will do everything a 30-30 will do plus a little more.
I think a lot of the bad reputation that 7.62x39 gets is due to the SKS's that they're often being launched from, rather than the round itself. Don't get me wrong an SKS is a fine plinking gun (though a bit loud and unwieldy for the task

), but for hunting it just lacks accuracy (an understatment) and is not very handy in the field. Awesome "toy" to have at the range though for the prices they sell for (I paid $99 for mine in unissued condition).
If more people got better guns for it (either the Handi-Rifle or one of the bolt actions like the CZ) then I think it'd have a better following.
