Cheap?

Whats the cheapest .223 bolt action rifle that anyone can think of? I'm a poor college student and need something cheap to shoot.

If you want a new rifle, the least expensive bolt action would be either a Stevens 200 or the Mossberg. One of the break open single shots would be cheaper still, and there is always the used gun market, several auction sites on the net.

I have a Hand-Rifle in 223 that I am trying to get rid of as cash or a bargaining chip for my new rifle. How is it for the Stevens and the Mossberg? Do they shoot well at all? Can they be accurized?

Definately the Savage Stevens 200.
The Mossberg will work, but the stevens has it hands-down as far as reviews online and on Graybeard forums.
It's alot of gun for the money.  Granted, its no Kimber or whatever top-shelf brand you want to put here, but a very accurate rifle for a very good price   (I found a NIB .243 on Gunbroker for $285 shipped and transfer fee covered)

I don't believe Mossberg offers the 100 ATR or the new 4X4 in .223.  I sure wish they did.  That would leave the Stevens 200 as the budget priced .223.

If i was looking for a "cheap" .223 bolt, I`d go to my local gun show.  Plenty to look at plus you get to barter
  on a price.

Stevens 200. 

If you want to look for the mossy atr, you would look into the .243, but that is getting more $ on ammo.

Stevens looks somewhere in my price range but is there any way I can upgrade the synthetic stock to wood later when I get more money? Also how much money can I get for my Handi-Rifle? Its bull barreled version if that matters.

I would just watch the classified forum---maybe look back 5-10 pages, too.  You'll see some that should give you an idea.
I think there's some barrels only over there right now.  That will give you an idea on total price too.

Richard's Microfit in Sun Valley California makes stocks for any production rifle you can name. And they'll make it out of any kind of wood you want to pay for. They are on San Fernando Road, but I don't remember the address. Try goggleing.

You might also think about parting out the Handi-Rifle. I was trying to sell mine whole a few months ago and was getting nowhere. Someone offered to buy the barrel if I parted it out, and in no time others chimed in for the stocks, and action. Got more $ parting it out than selling it whole. It's a little more hassle and more shipping, but still I was better off and it went in a hurry. JMHO (and experience).

By the way, I replaced it with a Stevens 200. I sanded and smoothed the stock, camo painted it and it's a shooter.
