Lookin' for Handi .270 loading data
« on: January 14, 2007, 12:48:08 PM »
I have been loading .270 for a little while but never loaded for a handi. I don't have my .270 barrel yet but have plenty of material and would like to start building before it gets here. Do they like 100 gr? 130gr? 140 gr? I have Speers, Noslers, A Frames and Grand Slams. Any help with a few mixes would be great! I also have an abundance of Nitrex 130 gr Grand Slam factory stuff. I'd like to hear from anyone about feeding this stuff to my Handi.   Thanks Ken

you will have to experiment with your .270 Win' barrel just like we have to with every other barrel.  each rifle/barrel is a law unto itself.

that being said, why not look at some propellant mfr's websites to see what loads they suggest.   historically the use of H-4831 is well-documented by Jack O'Connor for .270 usage.   so, too, is the use of H-4350 or IMR-4350.    BUT:   those powders having the same number from different mfr's are not necessarily the same:   IMR-4831 is faster than H-4831.

i get good results from Hornady bullets accuracy-wise.   i like Win's WLR primers in Remington brass with my loads.

you will have to do some experimentation, however, to see if your rifle agrees with mine.

take care,

ss'

Thanks SS'....I am aware that I will have to experiment and have every intention of doing just that. I have loads built that were built for Rem 700 22" 1-9 twist. Looks like I'm getting a 22" 1-10 with the handi. I was hoping to get a starting point from the guys that are shooting .270 Win  in their Handis. And perhaps some projectile suggestions that Handis like so I can stock up.Seems like the short barrels like heavier stuff.  I have a large list of "Jacks'" favorites but he really liked 1-9 twist too.Just hoping for a little start data , thats all. Thanks again,  Ken

I've had my best luck accuracy wise with IMR4350...Winchester cases..Winchester primers...and 90-160 grain bullets...all loads have been at max for my rifle or slightly above book loads on a couple of them..Velocities aren't the absolute top you can get...but the accuracy more than makes up for it...Work up in small increments watching for pressure signs until you find the best load..

Thanks Mac! I have a bunch of left-overs...most are 55gr imr4350 with 130s with various styles...sounds like I have a good start right here. I haven't tried anything above 140gr but have a few 150 Corelocs, Rem factory stuff. All of my loads are in Speer nickle plated cases from Nitrex and I have plenty of the Nitrex factory stuff with 130gr Grand Slams. Feels like you have told me the Handi likes them to move fast and thats me. I'd like to load up some light stuff and MAYBE use my .270 for some long PD shots while the .204s and .243 cool off. I'm trying to keep my calibers (barrel collection) to a minimum...at least for now until I can find some seriously good deals. Guess I'll wait a bit and see if anyone else offers some favorites. BTW...do you feel the Winchester brass to be significant...I have a few from some Ballistic Silver Tips, also nickle.  Ken

I think you'll find 65 grains of IMR4350 about 10 grains over the max book loads  :o :o :o..Most of my loads I had no problem bumping them up to max or slightly over..but not that much over...but my rifles aren't the norm either...many others may have a larger frame/barrel gap..and the chambers close to the max SAMMI specs...mines just the opposite...and are pretty tight chambered....So make sure you find out how yours is before using any reloaded for another rifle. The 270 Nitrex nickel cases have about 2-3 grains less powder capacity than standard Winchester brass cases...and run about the same with their nickel cases...and usually give me about 3-4 more loadings than the Winchesters...The best brass for serious bench work..Nosler's...it's usually some of the better brass...It's a little pricey as compared to the other..but more than makes up for it in quality...Again...start out low..and work your way up looking for the sweet spot...keeping an eye on the pressures...and velocities..

Mac, you caught me before I noticed the typo...I have 55 gr IMR 4350s not 65gr...also found some 100gr Speer HP over 57gr IMR4350. It should be a while before I need to buy brass but will absolutely look at Noslers when the time comes. So what do you think of the .270 for the back up? A little over kill?

Your asking a guy who shoots a 300 grain.458" Nosler Partition at 2425fps and a .338 180 grain Accubond at 3050fps if the 270 is over kill :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

No...the 270 is a fine balance of everything...I just wish they would make a 26" barrel standard...instead of the 22" for y'all...I had to have a 26" made for mine...I do know that the Speer 90 grainer loaded up to the max will flip a coyote over if hit right at 350 yards... ;) I haven't hunted anything smaller with it...besides that...
