Favorite "old" lure
« on: July 28, 2006, 08:33:21 AM »
Okay, as sort of a follow-up on the retro bass tourney..what is your favorite "old" lure?  Lets say at least 10 years old(I mean something that was available 10 yrs ago),not necessary for it to be a "bass" lure.  I can think of two right now..a Cordell Spot in pearl with blue eyes(those blue eyes seem to mean alot to some folks) and a old Christmas tree colored (green and white, with glitter)Zara Spook..

I've got a number that I still use.  BTW, 10 years is pretty recent for my tacklebox so I'll go back 30.

Frog colored U20 Flatfish
Bullfrog colored Tiny Torpedo
Silver Hottentot
Black or white Roostertail
CP Swing
Junebug Spinner
Rapalas of various sorts

Blessings!

I am still fishing, and having success with Rattletraps that were given to me back in the mid-seventies.  A friend who lived near Bill Lewis's place Near Boyce, La gave me a grocery (large) bag full of Rattletraps when I stopped in to see him in ALexandria, La.  I brought them to Texas and won many, many tournaments before someone finaly caught on and got them in the stores here.  As I understand, when Lewis first started, the marketing rights for the Rattletrap was sold to Penny's, and available only from their stores or catalog.  Other favorite old lures, the Big "O", and Thinfin.

Well, I don't use it much anymore but my favorite "OLD lure" is a 50s vintage "Hawiian Wiggler" my dear old grandfather gave me.  Don't use it because I don't want to lose it, not because it doesn't work.

Heddon Lucky 13
The midsized "Baby Lucky 13" works best for me on bass.
The smaller "tiny lucky 13" is good for pearch & sunfish.

I have a small plug called a Big O. It was made by Cornell probably a dozen years ago. It has and orange belly, green sides and a black back. I have seen similar lures made by rapala but they have a slightly different body and slightly different coloring.

I have caught more fish on that thing than any other lure and would buy more in a heartbeat if I could find them.

Gold 501 Super Duper.  I have been successful with this lure in small streams, ponds, large rivers, and lakes.

I have caught Kokanee, Steelhead, rainbow, brown, and Eastern Brook trout on it.  I have also caught bass, and perch on it.

As a kid I made them last a long time, and I have went swimming a number of times to rescue one.

Well, I don't know if it's really considered a lure but a 6 inch purple plastic worm with a white stripe has been pretty effective here lately.

Here's a very old favorite of mine, I found this lure in a root ball along the creek I fished about 50yrs ago when I was about 10yrs old, repainted it as best I could to the original colors and pattern with model paints. I've fished it many times, caught a couple bass on it,  maybe one of you fellas that collect old lures can tell me more about it. ;)

Thanks,

Tim

Back in the '50s I did about all my fishing with topwater lures.  My two favorites were the Devils Horse & Buck-and-Bawl, both by Smithwick.

Then.... I discovered the Texas-rigged plastic worm and spinnerbaits and havn't used a topwater in as long as I can remember.  Believe I need to dig them out for old time sake.

There have been a couple posts for the Heddon "Lucky13", I have a small one (red with whitespots) that I try from time to time but never get any interest.

Creme Scoundrel worm in purple fire-tail color.  I mainly fish it weightless like a floating worm.  Deadly in the springtime around here.

I can't tell you how many Bass and Pickeral I've caught on the Lucky 13. I caught a 3 1/2 pound smallmouth with it a couple of days ago.
Keep trying it out and you'll be surprised.

Hey folks, new here.

After reading what some of you have listed as your all time favorite lure, I thought I would kick in my 2 cents. Even though it is a short lived lure and you can still by them today, I have caught many a quality bass on Touchdown plastic worms. They are still a confidence bait for me.

I like the Hell Benders.  I'm thinking about getting a lathe to make my own out of wood and aluminum, then paint them the way I want.

Wow, old thread, but who cares!

I like the Zara Spook for largemouth, but my favorite is the Mepp's Spinner or Rooster Tail.  We slay the smallmouth with them.
