Author Topic: Obama Care affects a HUGE corporation and us (Read 6505 times)

My wife works part time for Martin Marietta, one of the largest corporations in the world today.

She just got notified that her hours have been cut to less than 30 per week starting in January because of Obama Care requirements.

Seems that the requirement means that any company that employs a person over 30 hours per week, even if only on a periodic basis, they have to provide insurance benefits.

Now, my wife is already considered a "part time employee" because her job entails filling in for full timers when they are ill or on vacation, and during peak seasonal times when the work load gets heavy. (She works in the Mining Division...yeah I'm a mean SOB who makes my wife work in the mine!

) Now they will have to shift other staff around to cover much of that stuff. Ultimately it may cost her her job altogether.

Even though we have insurance of our own and would not take company insurance from MM, they can't take the risk.

Yea, and we are stuck with it because too many people just could not get over their bias and vote for Romney. Can't blame the Democrates, it was Republicans that failed the country this time.

There is no Republican Party, there are a bunch of little splinter groups that call themselves Republicans, but they can not come together and agree on anything important. All they can agree on is complaining about the Democrates, but not do a thing about it.

I don't think bias had anything to do with it. No one wanted Romney in 08 either. He and McCain had tried twice a piece, and American voters didn't want them either time. Bad records of bad performance don't change just because someone said they change.
The Republicans offered up a loser in 08 and lost. They don't seem to learn very fast. Lessors of, are just that.

Doesn't seem to me that there was a lessor of evils. The "nonaction" of the Republican party was just as bad or maybe worse than the "actions" of the Democratic Party.

Aside from the money and power grab that is obamacare, it is also the libs answer to the economy employment numbers. Now that large corporations are reducing hours to 30 or less, they have to hire more part timers to fill the hours. Prestomagic it'll appear that hiring is up. J

Not true in the case of Martin Marietta, they are going to shift staffing around and increase work loads. They'll be able to do this because of the current job market being what it is. I'll bet we see this with other companies too.

It is what it is. Adapt or die. Your corporate overlords are going to try a lot of "creative" things to try and keep their own bonuses as high as they can. Ultimately, it won't help them. As the economy gets better, they will begin to lose essential personnel to places with a better employee environment. Hospitals are a good example as employers. Periodically, they get into financial crises--- mainly due to top heavy management. Their first reaction is to cut positions, hours, and benefits for nurses, who are the biggest part of the labor force in a hospital--- in fact, nurses are the reason there ARE hospitals--- nursing is the hospitals' essential service; Doctors, Radiologists, Physical Therapy, Rehab, etc., can all be done outpatient in an office. Anyway, the financial crises in hospitals always get worse, because a lot of their nurses leave for a better deal somewhere else, and there's always a better deal. The nurses are what makes a hospital what money it makes, just like labor is always what makes the money. Cutting back on what brings in the money is always a bad call for a business manager. Eventually, usually after getting rid of several managers, the hospital lightens up on the staff and the nurses come back. It's a cycle with hospitals that has been going on since the 1980s, at least. It's time for the corporate overlords to adapt and take less of the pie, or die.

The problem and cause of the country havin the president we have, and the economic crisis that America is in, is demonstrated "daily" right here on these forums. There are younger folks in this country that have never been hungry. This lack of that experience will most likely be a thing of the past in the not too distant future.
Our leaders are educated BEYOND their intelligence, and the younger crowd in many ways is also. Addition and subtraction is not complicated but, "new math" is. In the depression years all this was tried, and it didn't work then. WWII got us out of a depression that the rest of the world was already pulling out of. When the smoke clears, and some here are lookin in that governmental mirror, they are not going to be seeing what they were told they were seeing.
Like I said: Addition and subtraction still works, but like cursive writing is going by the wayside. Instant gratification, a disregard for "aged experience", and common sense has been replaced with new computer programs.
The Republican party will continue to do what it is doing, and wondering why it doesn't work, and the liberal youth will continue to hop on the freebie band wagon, until the horse can no longer pull it. Politicians are for their party, not their country.

Back to the OP , one must ask why such a large company can't pay the $8000.00 fine and offer no insurance ? what is saved over old HC cost can be given as raises to offset the cost of employees getting govt. HC insurance . In reality it would also reduce adminstration cost as HC would no longer need someone to handle it.
All these companies comming up with doom and gloom just don't hold water. Of course it is doing what the govt. is trying to force on us but why look like a bad guy to voters if you ever want to have a chance of over turning it ?

Because MM owns business sites, many with different names and contractual obligations but still owned by MM, all over the U.S. and the fine would be levied on each individual site. That's going to add up real fast. For instance in my state MM owns over twenty mines/quarries. My wife works at quite a few. of them on an "as needed" basis. Over the winter months she does not get much work but in the construction season her hours can really pile up fast. A lot depends on the weather too.

Not allowing the part timers to work more than 30 hours and shifting work loads doesn't cost them ANYTHING.

What part of that is hard to understand? That $8000.00 is money they could be using to pay my wife for working, helping them......and us.

Bottom line: government interference in private business is not helping anyone but the bottom feeders...who vote for more largess from the wallets of others.

Another thing, Social Security is going up about 15% to help cover Obamacare. If they don't keep the tax cuts, they are going up also. Dems refuse to cut spending. GOP has offered to raise taxes on wealthy, but it is only fair they get spending cuts.

America is going to fall, Obama is going to fail. Communism and socialism has never worked to increase wealth. Both stagnate economic growth.

For you liberals information, private companies have almost always offered health care because they want healthy employees not missing a lot of work time. Government meddling in the rules has caused this, not private companies.

Like Ronald Reagan said, "Government is the problem, not the solution".

In 1960 with the limited federal meddling in everything, 85% of Americans had health care insurance.

Once medicare, medicaid, and all the government meddling, that dropped, because of the rules, conditions, etc, that government placed on companies, not just the health care business, but the companies looking for health care for their employees.

Also, the "giant sucking sound" that Ross Perot warned us about with the free trade agreements taking our industry overseas. All manufacturing companies of any size provided health care for their employees. We had 35% of Americans in 1960 involved in manufacturing 65% were in the service industry or government. Today, only about 11-12% are in manufacturing. Manufacturing jobs paid decent wages for the working middle class. Today, all people can find are part time jobs, very few full time jobs left.

I have three small contractors installing pipelines and none of them want to hire because of so much government red tape and they are still unsure about the economy. Young people today don't want to dig ditches. Young people can't pass the drug tests required. Young people can't pass the credit checks, nor background arrests checks. The last two labor jobs we hired college grads because over 200 people put in for each job. Over 190 of the 200 of these young people couldn't pass any of these checks. We interviewed 5 for one job an 6 for another, and the college grads got the jobs because they needed to work. One was married and was starting his family, so he didn't mind digging ditches. He later got a promotion with a job came open. The other one is waiting for a promotion to open up.

Only a handful of young people are worth hiring today. Drug testing alone keeps a lot of young people from getting decent jobs.

The company that I retired from, used to provide very good medical insurance up to the age where a retiree and spouse were eligible for Medicare. I retired at 59 and was provided with Medical Insurance until I reached 65. That no longer obtains for the new retirees. I was talking to a fella who is still working there and he said he doesn't know what he is going to do, because if he retires before he is eligible for Medicare, a very large chunk of his pension would have to go for insurance. I didn't ask him who he voted for, but I'm sure he is so grateful to Obama and the liberals in Congress. Unintended consequences? Naw, it's just getting real and moving forward--right?

The Democrates will have it locked up for the next 8 to 12 years. The Republican Party does not exist as a party. Like I said back last summer, when I predicted they could not come togeather. It's a bunch of little splinter groups with their own bias ideas, that are totally unbendable. Oh I've gotten over it, I'm an indapendent that is beginning to swing the other way.

Dont know where you work or worked. Corperations are not built for employees to make money. They built to make company money. I never understand why people try and beat the companies down for trying to make a profit.

Wait till all the details come out, heard yesterday the 401k plans are soon to be taken over. With everyone getting the same profit return.

I've worked too hard and too long to give up my pension and 401k. If I get wind of them trying this, I will go ahead and retire, take all of it in lump sum and roll it into my own IRA. I don't want to spread my money around. Let these poor lazy leaches find a job and work for theirs like I did. I came from a poor family. My family lived in a two room house with an outhouse until I was 6 years old. We didn't get any government money. Family worked in the cotton mills or farmed their small farm. Things got better when everyone got jobs and quit the farm.

Communism and socialism produces leaches on the producers. Brings everyone down. Expanding capitalist economies bring everyone up, some more than others, but ALL are brought up.

If you're under 59 1/2 they could care less what you do. Take the money out and pay the 40%+ penalty to the .gov

And no one is going to ask you if you want the gov to take your 401k - they will just do it.

Long before that is an issue, they will just issue new currency to counter hyper inflation - your $100k of USD will be worth $1k in "Amerigo's" - at that point, doesn't really matter what's in your 401k or who controls it.
