Anyone put a brass plate on their Handi? Working on a BC look alike stock. Thought it would be a neat ad on.
Any suggestions?

I am putting the Kentucky rifle style on my faux muzzleloader. But I was thinking of a plain one like the factory plastic, except curved on my BC look a like stock.

Please see pic. It does not really do the brass justice as the wood fence is reflected and it looks unfinished. Quite a detailed job and you need a bandsaw and belt or disk sander but a lot of fun to do. If you wish I can go through it with you.

That is a beautiful stock. I do like the shape of the brass.
I have access to a band saw and have the grinders and sanders.

The attached pic is the same brass piece on the original stock before I tranferred it to a walnut stock I finished. Perhaps it shows the brass piece better.

I started with a piece of brass plate 1/4" -.250 thick. (hard to find) Remove the old butt plate and transfer punch the hole locations in the brass.
Drill the holes and countersink them slightly below the surface to allow for finishing. (be certain to countersink these holes correctly and maintain a good finish as you do not want this piece ever moving from "home". Purchase some brass screws to replace the originals but make them 1" to 1-1/4" long so you can find a good anchor. Drill the pilot holes a little deeper than the stock ones to accomodate these longer screws. NOW install the plate and check for fit. Install and remove it at least 4-5 times so the plate finds "home"
Spray the butt side of the plate with dycum and install it on the stock. Scribe around the stock on the plate. Remove and band saw about 1/16" on the outside of the scribe. Remove and begin belt or wheel sanding. The entire plate can be sanded at a 90 degree angle but be cautious when you approach the toe end of the butt as it is not 90 degrees. This muct be done by hand and very carefully. Its kinda like a trigger job---remove too much and you start over. You might have to install and remove the plate 12 or more times during this fitting process. It is a little delicate when you blend the 90 degree edge with the toe angle but challenging. Leave a slight amount of material for sanding with 300 and eventually 600 paper. Finish with 0000 steel wool before polishing. You can radius the edges but be careful at the toe area where a sharper edge should be maintained.

Great job Kansasj. Think I will go brass hunting today. I did one out of aluminum. I reworked a youth model .17 HMR to an adult with a new stock and forearm. Yes it is a Rossi. H&R guys please forgive me. It was a fun project. reclusej

Me too. I don't know why they don't just have them made and offer them as options on certain models or make them available as parts. Again, another market lost.

I think Tim and CW ought to be running H&R for Big Green.

I have this feeling that they want to have the single shot line made out of country to shave expenses, and will phase out the current H&R line. I hope not. Since Tim's contact left, we've been left empty handed. The guy now in charge doesn't seem to know his a$$ from a hole in the ground and doesn't care.

I've had that exact same thought, but was hesitant to express it. I keep picturing them being made on the shores of Lake Baikal!

They already have a product made in Russia! It's called the Spartan (by Remington) SP-18. It's a pretty sleek single shot that's priced right along with the Handi's. Looks like it was patterened off the old Savage 219 line. We may have to try one at some point if Remington keeps messing with H&R. 44 Man

Spartan rifles are history, Remington no longer imports them, they discontinued them not long after they Bought Marlin/H&R.

Guys I wanted to put in a word for kansasj.

This guy offered and sent me a piece of brass to make a butt plate out of!!
I know the good folks on the site offer up things all the time.
BUT he also thru in a polished brass TRIGGER GUARD!!!!!
