Opening day with the Handi-Rifle
« on: November 15, 2008, 11:04:25 AM »
Today was opening day of firearms deer season here in southwest VA. I got up about 5:00AM took a shower, then watched the weather channel while I drank my morning coffee. The radar showed lots of rain so I grabbed my Frogg Toggs, Gortex flop hat and my 500S&W Handi, then headed out to my stand.
I got to my stand about 15 to 20 minutes before daylight, it wasn’t raining then but I went ahead and put my rain gear on. This turned out to be a wise decision because just after daybreak it started raining.
At 8:00 AM I spotted a big doe about 125 yards away she quickly walked behind a large Autumn Olive bush out of my sight. I kept watching for her to come out and about 20 minutes later I caught some movement off to the right about 30 yards. I couldn’t make out what it was to begin with, then he stepped out in the open. I removed the scope cover turned the 1.5-4 Burris to 4x and held the cross hair just behind his shoulder as the 500 roared.
At the shot I saw him give the old familiar mule kick and he took off down hill in a straight line and out of my sight. I got down out of my stand and walked over to where he was standing and found lots of brown hair. I slowly made my way down the hill in the direction he went and about 100 yards later I found him piled up.

This was the very first time that the 500 got to go hunting!  ;D

Hello Troyboy, I drilled and tapped my barrel and used a Weaver scope base for the TC Contender.

Thanks CW! It really surprised me at how far he ran after I found hiw and saw where I hit him. The 385 grain Rem. Ultra-bonded Core Lokt seems to be a pretty tough bullet. My load chronos 2000 fps, the range was about 125 yards, I had a .50 hole going in and maybe a .75 going out. There was very little meat damage  :), I liked that part of the bullet performance.

Thank for the info!!

I picked up a bag of these last month and loaded up about 20 with two different loads. neither was to my accuracy requirements. but this is the first (This bullet)I have herd of actual in the field performance!!!  Where any bones hit?
The first deer I saw hit was shot by my buddie while we still hunted together. We slowly walk past each other and stop for 5-10-15Min's, then the other still hunts past not stopping until passing by about 30-50yards. I watch the deer walk straight at me while he shouldered the handi and FIRED. The deer literally was pushed 12-18" sideways and fell in a pile. That was with a factory load. HUGE exit hole. I may have been a 50A&E bullet, I don't remember for sure. It was a while back and not many bullets where available at the time.

No bones were hit unless it caught a rib bone.

I, too took a handi in 06 hunting in VA, (Patric co) first day. After the last 2 days of ML with a 50 cal huntsman(same receiver) with my rain gear, no luck, I waited most of Sat. for all the downpours to cease, went out 'bout 4:30, now just a light sprinkle, a nice doe stepped out at about 125 yds. Well, at least my $183.00 non-resident lic. did'nt go to waste and the time spent hunting with my son, PRICELESS!
