Marble has a Tang Sight in their catalog #009848 for the Buffalo Classic Rifle. Has anyone ever tried it or how does it mount? Am interested in putting one on if possible. Advice needed.

I don't think there's any option but to mount it to the stock.

Not a Marbles sight but I had one mounted on the wrist portion of the buttstock. Lee Shave, set a small steel plate there and drilled and tapped it to accept the sight, so it was removable without eventually ruining the stock, like wood screws will eventually do.

I sure don't want to mount in wood. A small rectangular plate added to the steel at the beginning of the wood might be the answer.
Then what sight to use?

There are several options starting at $55 for sights similar to the Marbles, they're all listed in the Long Range Sights for the BC and Target link in the FAQs.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will take a look and see what is available. Right at this minute I am all shot out at 100yds with the factory sight. Little past the white line at top of sight, it is a 100yds but no more.

There are 3 options mounting a rear tang or vernier sight to a H&R:
1. Have a tang made by a gunsmith - Expensive
2. Tap a screw hole on the back of the receiver and mount the sight to the receiver and stock - Have to have a milling machine to do it for proper alignment
3. Mount the sight completely on the stock. Recommend using PRESS IN INSERTS embedded in epoxy: http://www.woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=897-906

I have not bought one of these, but I am considering putting one on my rifle when I get it back from the gunsmith. It uses the scope mount holes. MV out!

Be prepared to order a peep slider for it if you don't like the notch slider it comes with.

Brownell's has it for $10 less than BA, and you may even get the peep slider, although the pic may just be wrong just as it is at BA.

I think the Wesson & Harrington Ladder sight is the way to go. I wish it didn't have the Buckhorn on the back. Is the back Buckhorn sight adjustable for up to 50yds? This needs to be so I could hit something. Is there a replacement for the Buckhorn sight?

I'm not aware of a replacement for the buckhorn, there's no elevation adjustment on it unless you shimmed or ground material off the bottom. Seems to me Bernie mentioned where the buckhorn hits in one of the threads in the FAQ link.

Today was the first day I shot the Smith Ladder with rear Buckhorn sight. I really exceeded my expectations for a fixed sight. Didn't get to shoot with the ladder as I was at a 100yd range and the Buckhorn was great. Shot two different loads 1) 29grs of H4198 with 405gr Meister cast FN that average 1249fs with a spread of 17fps, the load is still just a little under for my purposes. Will add two more grains and try to get it over 1300 to 1350fps. Although it shot well and at 100 yds about a 2 to 2.5" group about two inches low. Shot 10rds with it and went to the bigger load. 2) 48.8grs of IMR with 405gr Remington JFN @ 1780fps with a spread of 14fps (boy they will wake you up). Very accurate round but a guy wouldn't want to shoot more than 10rds of this before he went home. Last four rounds were a 1"0" group at 100yds with the Buckhorn sight so I was well pleased with the product. The sight was great. Am going to Hutchinson, Ks in next couple of weeks with some different loads to try my luck with the ladder at the 600yds ranges they have. This is a lot of fun.

From Lyman Sights...Series 17A Target Front Sights

17 A Target Sights are machined from a solid piece of steel and are designed to be mounted in 3/8"dovetail slots. They are supplied with eight interchangeable inserts that are locked in place with a threaded cap.

Sight Heights*

17 AHB .404 17AMI .494 17AUG .584

*from bottom of dovetail to center of aperture.

and from Williams Sights...H&R Buffalo Classic use .570W front sight.

If you're into long range shooting, the .404" is the best choice, I have it on my 45-120 BC, although I have no place to shoot long range!! $:-\$ Read the "Long Range sights for the BC and Target" link in the FAQs, there aren't many questions that aren't answered there.

The front sight on the factory equipped BC is a .584" or .494", they don't seem to be consistent, several of us have the .584" and have swapped it out for the ..404" and are very happy with it and the Lee Shaver inserts, but a lot use the Williams FP target rear sight instead of the WGRS that comes on the BC, it leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks! I guess I will try my .450 front sight while I find the .404. I appreciate your help. I got a special elk permit this year and plan on whacking the big boy with this rifle and iron sights. MV out!

I got mine from Buffalo Arms. If you order from them, be sure to check out the Lee Shaver inserts, they're much nicer than any of the Lyman inserts. Midsouth has the best price on the sight tho.

Ok, I ordered the .404 front sight from Buffalo Arms and the Lee Shaver Globe Lyman 17A inserts from Brownells.

I have a special elk permit and might have to make a 300 yard shot with these sights. I really want to take an elk with my BC. I hope this works. MV out!

Here is my H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic 45/70 Rifle. I will get better pics when the sights get here Thursday. The receiver is all NP3 and the barrel is Roguard by Robar. MV out!
